Alabama Diamond Notes: Week 5


PBR Alabama Staff

The Alabama Diamond Notes will focus on highlighting some top performances across the state based on nominations from high school coaches. We will highlight positions players, pitchers and two-way players every Tuesday of the high school season that had impressive weeks during their team's games. Special thank you to the many high school coaches that sent in nominations this week.

Jake Donaldson RHP / SS / Ragland, AL / 2023

Donaldson finds his name on the list again as he was 3-6 (.500 BA) with two runs driven in while drawing a walk and stealing a base this week. On the mound he got a complete game win (7 IP), allowing one hit and one earned run. He also struck out 13 hitters. 

Dakota NeSmith 3B / 1B / Arab , AL / 2023

The Gadsden State CC signee had another huge week at the plate as he was 10-15 (.667 BA) with two home runs and and two doubles. He scored eight runs and drove in 11 runs for the 5A No. 4 Knights. 

John Ray Wilks 2B / OF / Arab , AL / 2023

The uncommitted senior enjoyed a big week with the bat as he hit .429 (6-11) over that span. He drove in eight runs and and scored six additional runs. 

Damien Hart C / Charles Henderson, AL / 2023

The senior catcher hit an even .500 (6-12) over the week while also walking three times. Hart homered twice, had one triple and two doubles as he drove in six runs as well.  

Colton Walls 3B / RHP / Stanhope Elmore, AL / 2023

The Troy signee had as good of a week as anyone and was under serious consideration for "Mizuno Player of the Week". Walls was 1-0 on the mound as he tossed five innings of shutout baseball. He scattered four hits, struck out eight and did not walk anyone. With the bat he hit .900 (9-10) with four doubles and a home run. He also drove in 12 runs.  

Mason Steele OF / RHP / Headland, AL / 2023

The Shelton State CC continues to produce for the 5A No. 1 Headland Rams. The senior was 5-7 (.714 BA) with two triples while scoring two runs and driving in another one. He also walked once and gained a save (1 IP) on the mound.

Tee Foster SS / 2B / Madison Academy, AL / 2025

Foster had a week that will be tough to replicate as he was 12-15 (.800 BA) with three doubles, one triple and two home runs. The uncommitted sophomore shortstop also drove in 14 runs. 

Carter Wells RHP / 1B / Sparkman, AL / 2023

Wells continues to produce in a two-way role for the 7A No. 10 Senators. The Northeast Mississippi CC signee was 1-0 (7 IP) and did not allow a run. He allowed only three hits and struck out eight. Offensively, he was 4-7 (.571 BA) with two home runs and a double. He also drove in six runs and walked six times.  

Paul Andrzejewski, Jr. SS / RHP / St. John Paul II, AL / 2023

An Army commit, Andrzejewski was 9-15 (.600 BA) with three doubles and two home runs. On the mound he threw 7.2 innings and only allowed one earned run with 11 strikeouts. He scattered four hits and only walked one. 

Peyton Watts SS / 2B / Oxford, AL / 2023

A Troy signee, Watts put up huge numbers during the week. He was 12-19 (.632 BA) with three doubles and two home runs (including a grand slam) while driving in 13 runs. He scored 12 runs , walked five times and had four stolen bases. 

Hayes Harrison 1B / LHP / Oxford, AL / 2023

Hayes, a Northwest-Shoals CC signee, also was 12-19 (.632 BA) like his teammate Watts. He collected three doubles and drove in nine runs for the 6A No. 1 Yellow Jackets. He also scored six runs and walked three times and was hit-by-pitch twice as well.  

Connor Gehr SS / RHP / Gulf Shores , AL / 2024

The uncommitted junior was 6-13 (.462 BA) with a home run and a triple. He drove in nine runs and also stole two bases while walking twice. On the mound, he tossed six innings allowing five hits and only allowing one earned run. He struck out seven hitters. 

Brendon Byrd OF / LHP / Gulf Shores, AL / 2023

The uncommitted senior outfielder was 6-13 (.462) for the 5A No. 9 Dolphins. He had one home run, a triple and a double to go with four runs drive in. He scored four runs, walked twice and stole two bases. 

Alex King 2B / SS / Gulf Shores, AL / 2024

King (a junior) was 5-11 (.455 BA) with four runs driven in and two runs scored for the Dolphins. He walked once and was hit-by-pitch two times. The junior also stole two bases. 

Connor Gatwood RHP / SS / Baker High School , AL / 2024

The South Alabama commit hit .583 BA (7-12) with two doubles and seven runs driven in for the week. He also scored two runs to go with a walk and a stolen base. 

Chase Ambrose RHP / SS / Buckhorn, AL / 2023

The Southeastern Louisiana signee enjoyed a successful week in a two-way role for the Bucks. On the mound he worked five innings and did not allow an earned run while striking out five hitters. He scattered two hits in a no decision. With the bat, Ambrose was 6-11 (.545 BA) with two doubles and three home runs (coming in consecutive at-bats). 

Joshua Henson SS / RHP / Buckhorn , AL / 2025

The uncommitted sophomore was 6-13 (.462 BA) with two doubles and a home run. On the mound he got a complete game win (5 IP) as he allowed only one hit and struck out seven hitters. He did not allow a run. 

Andre Towers OF / Madison County, AL / 2023

The senior outfielder was 4-7 (.571 BA) with a double while scoring three runs. Towers also drove in three runs and stole five bases. 

Reece Cato 1B / LHP / Bob Jones, AL / 2024

The uncommitted junior was 5-8 (.625 BA) this week for the 7A No. 3 Patriots. He drove in eight runs and scored two more. Cato also walked twice and had a stolen base. 

Aidan Doyle OF / 1B / Bob Jones, AL / 2023

Doyle, an uncommitted senior, was 4-6 (.667 BA) with a home run and two doubles. He also walked once and scored two runs in addition to driving in five runs for the Patriots. 

Sam Mitchell RHP / 1B / Bob Jones, AL / 2023

Mitchell, an Alabama signee, continues to be a main contributor for the 7A No. 1 Patriots. On the mound, Mitchell was 1-0 (7 IP) getting a complete game win as he struck out eight hitters. He allowed three earned runs and struck out four. Offensively, he was 3-8 (.375 BA) with two home runs and a double while driving in four runs. One of his home runs was a walk-off three run shot to give the Patriots a win in the bottom of the 8th inning. 

Charles Harbin 1B / C / New Hope , AL / 2024

The uncommitted junior enjoyed a ton of success with the bat this week as he was 10-17 (.588 BA) with three doubles and a triple. Harbin also drove in nine runs over the course of the week. 

Layton Pohl RF / New Hope High School, AL / 2026

The freshman was impressive in a two-way role for the Indians as he was 6-11 (.545 BA) with two doubles and a triple. Pohl also drove in five runs and was 4/4 on stolen bases. On the mound, he tossed four innings while striking out five hitters. He allowed four hits and walked only one. 

Tylan Amerson / Minor, AL / 2023

The junior outfielder from Minor High School was 10-12 (.833 BA) with seven runs scored to go along with one walk. Amerson also drove in three runs and had ten stolen bases during the week. 

Payton Purser RHP / RHP / Hamilton , AL / 2024

Purser, an uncommitted junior, ht an even .500 (6-12) for the week which included two home runs and two doubles. He scored two runs and also drove in two runs for the Aggies. 

Nathan Guyse 1B / 3B / James Clemens, AL / 2023

Guyse, an uncommitted senior, seems to be getting hot with the bat at the right time. This week he was 5-10 (.500 BA) with two doubles and a home run. He also walked twice and scored four runs while driving in five runs. 

Colten Payton C / 3B / James Clemens, AL / 2023

The Wallace-Hanceville CC signee was 5-12 (.417 BA) this week while also showing stellar defense behind the plate. He had a double and drove in three runs. Payton also walked once. 

Evan Hilliard 3B / RHP / Saraland, AL / 2024

The uncommitted junior went seven innings to get a complete game win for the 6A No. 7 Spartans. He scattered three hits and did not allow an earned run while not walking a batter. He struck out two during his outing.  

Brady Gillespie LHP / OF / Springville, AL / 2023

Gillespie, an uncommitted senior, got a complete game win (7 IP) in a 2-0 contest against Fort Payne. He only allowed one hit and did not allow a run. He struck out 11 hitters and only walked one. 

Blake Hall SS / RHP / Hazel Green, AL / 2023

The Gadsden State CC signee was brilliant for the Trojans on the mound in a 2-0 win over Cullman. Hall earned the complete game win (7 IP) as he allowed only two hits and did not walk anyone. He also struck eight hitters while using only 83 pitches over the seven innings. 

Bryce Gover RHP / 3B / Headland, AL / 2025

Gover, an uncommitted sophomore, worked five innings this week for the 5A No. 1 Headland Rams. He allowed only four hits and did not allow a run over that span while striking out ten hitters. 

Hunter Williams RHP / Dothan, AL / 2023

The senior was 1-0 this week with a complete game (7 IP) win over Hoover. He scattered three hits and walked only one, giving up one earned run. For the year, Williams has a 1.07 ERA and has recorded three consecutive complete games. 

Chase Cartron LHP / 1B / Huntsville, AL / 2024

Cartron, a Troy commit, got a complete game win (6 IP) for the Panthers as he scattered three hits and did not allow a run against West Limestone. He walked two and struck out ten hitters. 

Hunter Wippert RHP / 3B / Central-Phenix City, AL / 2024

An uncommitted junior, Wippert recorded a complete game win (7 IP) against Hoover this week. He allowed only two earned runs while walking only one hitter. He scattered three hits and struck out nine hitters. 

Brody Stamp RHP / Central, AL / 2024

Stamp turned in a masterful outing outing for the 7A No. 2 Red Devils in a complete game win over a potent Hartselle lineup. Stamp went all seven innings and did not allow a walk. He allow two earned runs on two hits and struck out five. 

Zack Munger RHP / Baker , AL / 2023

The Bishop State CC signee earned a complete game (7 IP) win in a 2-0 victory over McGill-Toolen. He did not allow a run while only surrendering one hit. He walked only three hitters and struck out eight. 

Braden Booth RHP / 3B / Bob Jones , AL / 2024

Booth, a Mississippi State commit, earned a complete-game (5 IP) win last week for the 7A No. 3 Patriots as he allowed only one hit in his outing. He walked only hitter, did not allow a run and had seven strikeouts. 

Mason Busch RHP / OF / James Clemens, AL / 2024

The uncommitted junior continues to give the Jets quality outings as he went seven innings on the mound to get a complete game win. He scattered three hits while only walking one hitter. He did not allow a run and struck out six. Opposing hitters hit only .136 against him.  

Luke Davenport RHP / 3B / James Clemens, AL / 2024

The Auburn commit continues to turn in quality outings for the Jets. This week he got a complete game win (5 IP) while not allowing a run. He allowed only one hit and walked just a single batter. He struck out nine as opposing hitters hit only .059 against him.
