PBR Alabama Staff

The 2022 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Alabama.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Montgomery at the AISA or AHSAA state championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Alabama. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and by continuing our scheduled podcasts and releasing our preseason Top 10 in each AHSAA classification.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week, updating the Top 10 in each AHSAA classification as well as a Power 25. One thing that you especially don’t want to miss are our scheduled podcasts with guests from across the state as well as recaps and previews of big games across the state.

Team Outlook

The Stanhope Elmore Mustangs comes in to the 2022 season with a chance to be real contenders in Class 6A. The Mustangs reached the Class 6A State Playoffs last spring, but was eventually defeated by a tough Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa squad. The good news is that they return almost everyone from last year's team, including a few Division 1 commitments & signees.

The Mustangs got off to a blazing start last spring, going 14-1 in the first few weeks and finding themselves ranked inside the Class 6A Top 10 for a couple weeks. RHP/INF Zach Stevens (South Alabama) should be one of the top arms in this talented rotation. Stevens is a junior who has an electric fastball that's been up to 90 mph and one of the best breaking balls in the junior class in the state. LHP/OF Colin Woodham should be right up there with Stevens in the rotation, as he's been the No. 1 on the mound ever since his freshman year. Woodham is an excellent competitor with a low-80's fastball and & elite pitchability. 3B/RHP Colton Walls (Troy) has caught helium over the past year, resulting in him committing to the Trojans at the back-end of the summer. He's a 6-3, 205-pounder who has been up to 91 mph and has some gap-to-gap pop from the left side, as well. SS/RHP Chase Williams (Alabama-Birmingham) is another junior who does a lot of things well for the Mustangs. He's an athletic player with solid feel for the barrel and a reliable glove up the middle. RHP/OF Evan Duncan is another talented junior who will also compete for some big innings for the Mustangs. He's a 6-6, 245-pounder who was the No. 3 last year, and has a chance to start at an outfield position, as well.

We've talked a good bit about the returning arms that Stanhope Elmore has returning, but they also return some more key pieces from a talented lineup last spring. C Caleb Rohrbach is a middle-of-the-order hitter who led the Mustangs in home runs last spring. He'll be looked upon for that same type of offensive production in 2022. 1B/OF Conner Gregg is another senior that the Mustangs get back after a successful junior campaign. Last year, Gregg led the team in batting average hitting out of the three-spot in the lineup. OF Tevin Landrum is another starter coming back from last year that played center field in 2021. MIF Hayden Anderson is another name that could see a good amount of playing time. He's an eighth-grader who could play one of the middle infield spots. Although the Mustangs bring back some frontline arms in the rotation, there are some other pitchers who will battle it out for significant innings on the mound. A few of these pitchers include LHP Winston Person, RHP Brodie Cockrell, RHP Matthew Gainey, LHP Tyler Woodham & RHP Dylan Dent. It's easy to see the amount of talent coming back for the Mustangs, as they will look to make a deep run throughout the Class 6A State Playoffs in 2022.
