On Tuesday, July 14th, The Performance Lab in Mobile, AL played host some very talented players from the southern part of the state of Alabama. Many players caught our eye and some put up some impressive statistical numbers. Over the next few days, we will be providing unparalleled post-event coverage on all of the players that were in attendance yesterday.

Today, we are going to take a look at some of the top performers from yesterday's South Alabama Select. There were many impressive days for players, but we want to highlight some of the ones that stood out to us. The Statistical Leaderboards will be released tomorrow with scouting reports on all players coming in the days following.

'22 SS/RHP Henry Mitchell (Albuquerque, NM) 

Definitely one of the better performances on the day came from the bat and the arm of Mitchell. Hailing all the way from New Mexico, Mitchell did not disappoint in his second PBR Alabama event of the summer. As a switch-hitting shortstop, Mitchell looked comfortable from both sides of the plate during BP, posting a 91 mph exit velo. It's an advanced approach with hard contact to the gaps. Sure hands at shortstop with above avg. arm strength (84 mph). Could possibly stick there but also could slide to 3rd base. Hopped on the mound and was 84-85, 86 mph with exceptional command with the fastball. Breaking ball showed hard, late bite at 79-80 mph. Changeup was a solid 3rd offering at 79-81 mph.

'21 RHP Dominick Castronova (Daphne HS)

Impressed with the overall performance on the mound that this rising senior turned in yesterday. Fastball worked primarily 83-84 mph and even bumped 85 mph at the end of his outing. Pitch shows some sink to his arm side. Breaking ball showed some late 11/5 break to it at 73-76 mph. Really liked the changeup, as it mimicked the fastball at 77-79 mph. Showed some real command with all pitches.

'22 C Colton Wood (Faith Academy)

One of the winner's of the day, this rising junior showcased it all yesterday. To start the day, he showed some real athletic ability running a 6.83 60 yard dash. During BP, Wood put on a real display of strength with some gap to gap juice from the right side of plate vs. a LH BP thrower, even though he is listed as a switch-hitter. Behind the plate, he posted consistent 1.85-1.90 pop times to along with a strong arm (80 mph) and quick transfers. Handled all arms during the bullpen sessions very well. Quiet receiver that moves well defensively. Really bolstered his stock yesterday.

'22 3B Brody Hinton (Mobile Christian)

This rising junior has really made some notable strides in terms of physicality since the last time we had eyes on him. Looked comfortable in the box during BP, driving balls to pull side and the gaps. Posted an exit velo off of a tee at 88 mph. Has had a really good summer so far for the Baysox Baseball Academy.

'21 OF Hayden Phillips (Fairhope)

Listed at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, one of Phillips' more impressive tools is his strength. Showcased a short, compact stroke from the right side during BP with line drives to the pull side. 92 mph exit velo off of a tee. Also ran a 6.93 laser-timed 60 YD at the event. Really like the overall performance from this rising senior.

'23 OF Malcolm Pugh (Leroy HS)

Got our first look at this rising sophomore last year and was impressed with some of the tools he had to offer. Turned in another solid day yesterday, posting some high numbers statistically. Showed a pull side approach with some loud contact during BP. Ran a 6.68 laser-timed 60 YD. Still very raw ability but there is not denying that the physicality and the tools are there for Pugh.

'22 RHP Jackson Smith (Saraland HS)

Listed at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Smith was one of the more physically imposing players at this event. Went through this event as a pitcher only and showed some promising stuff on the mound. Fastball played 84-85 mph consistently with some arm side run. Breaking ball had some late break at 72-73 mph and the changeup worked 71-72 mph and was down/below the zone. Still could clean up some stuff mechanically but has some upside.
