Class of 2022- Rankings Updated

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

As of today, The PBR Arizona- Class of 2022 Player Rankings have been updated. Our staff has been out at games consistently to start the spring and will continue to cover games through the conclusion of the season. We are looking forward to seeing many more players compete. This list includes players from all over the state of Arizona that play across the different classifications of high school baseball. These rankings have been organized through an extensive evaluation process that includes our live game coverage as well as our own PBR events. We have also used valued scouts & local coaches for player recommendations to add to our watch list for further evaluation. Not on the list and feel you got overlooked? Feel free to tag us in any social media posts. We may not like or retweet them all but we're definitely paying attention. There will be another opportunity to add to this list as the 2021 spring season wraps and we move into our summer coverage.

Shooter Hunt highlighted the Arizona Class of 2022 as one of his sleeper classes as part of the National Rankings release:

With depth that extends well beyond the top 500 of the overall list, Arizona’s 2022 class has emerged as even more talented than previously suspected. At the top, OF Gavin Turley (Hamilton HS, AZ), an Oregon State recruit, takes over thanks to quick hands that whip the barrel through the zone with some exciting power potential from the right side. Behind him, long-limbed LHP Austin Humphries (Shadow Ridge HS, AZ), and Arizona State recruit, continues to trend up towards the high ceiling that has been set for so long, and is now running his fastball up into the low 90s with more likely on the way. Still more, players like LHP/OF Brandon Compton (Buckeye Union HS, AZ), a San Diego recruit, and RHP Hayden Lewis (Chaparral HS, AZ), an Arizona recruit have seen recent jumps and bring exciting upside and quick arms to the diamond. Speedy outfielders, OF Ethan Hott (Chaparral HS, AZ), a Stanford recruit, and OF TJ Adams (Red Mountain HS, AZ), an Arizona recruit give the state even more to get excited about looking towards next year.

Turley takes over No. 1

2022 OF Gavin Turley (Hamilton)- Oregon State commit, Turley made a move to Arizona from Utah before the school year started and we were able to get a small glimpse of him during the fall season which helped him move into our top-10 pretty quickly. This spring, Turley has been regular everyday starter in the Hamilton Huskies lineup, consistently hitting towards the top of the order while starting in the OF. Turley generates advanced bat speed for his age coming from a combination of his quick hands and lean strength. He has the athleticism and feel to keep making improvements and we wouldn't be surprised to see some increased power numbers in the near future.

Comptons arm on the rise

+ 2022 LHP/OF Brandon Compton (Buckeye)- San Diego commit, Compton has been one of the more capable two-way potential players in the class. He competed with Team Arizona at the PBR Future Games as a result. He's a hard worker that always comes back showing improvements from the time before. He attended our Preseason All-State Games where he showed off some significant gains in the strength category. It translated to the field, displaying more power potential with increased bat speed. He also made huge strides on the mound from our previous viewing, topping at 89.6mph via Trackman at the event. This spring, Compton has dominated the competition so far, working his FB in the low 90's and reaching up to 93mph in an outing. He currently has the most strike outs in the state to begin the spring.

Lewis' quick loose arm

+ 2022 RHP/OF Hayden Lewis (Chaparral)- Arizona commit, Lewis still shows some some same upside that first grabbed our attention at our preseason event back in January of 2020. We were able to catch him early on in our coverage this spring. Lewis' arm is still as quick & loose as ever, throwing from a 3/4 arm slot with short arm swing, attacking hitters with solid two-pitch combo. His FB is firm, getting on you quick at 87-89mph at 2300 rpm. Hitters have trouble working with the pace. He also has one of the better SL's we have seen in the state at 74-78mph with tight sweeping action at 2500 rpm, showing some swing & miss with plus future potential. If he can continue to build on his current offerings while keeping the same arm action, he could be one of the tougher pitchers in the state in the future. Lewis has also been playing outfield while hitting towards the top of the Firebirds lineup.

Koble's steady upward trend

+ 2022 LHP Brandon Koble (Red Mountain)- Koble has steadily gone up our board since last summer. At 6-foot-4, 180-pounds, the Arizona State commit has shown plenty of upside in his tall, long-levered frame with present athleticism. He uses an athletic delivery with easier effort from 1B side of the rubber with high leg kick. Throws with short loose arm action from H3/4 arm slot. Mostly two-pitch mix. FB sat 83-85mph, topping at 85.67 via trackman with some arm side run. Koble has also been up above 88mph on different occasions while mixing in a slurvy breaking ball at 68-72mph that broke 18.7in to the glove side at its best. Low spin CH has a chance to be a solid 3rd offering that could be thrown more in the future. Has the qualities to continue to make progress on the mound.
