Phoenix Summer Review: Blast Motion Board

Paul Panaccione
Arizona Scouting Director

On Sunday, Aug. 22, the annual Phoenix Summer Review was hosted at Grand Canyon University. An open event rounding out the summer in the Valley for 2022-2025 graduates. Talents were on display in front of the PBR Arizona staff, while data was being recorded by state-of-the-art technology.

Today, we take a look at the data recorded for hitters on Blast Motion sensors. Our Blast Analysis contains data such as: hand speed, bat speed, rotational acceleration, and on plane efficiency.

7 Nicolas Masciangelo AZ Mountain View 2023 OF 21.4 mph
8 Derek Kiepke AZ Liberty 2024 C 21.0 mph

Peak Hand Speed: The observed maximum speed as measured on the handle of the bat (measured six inches from the knob of the bat). Peak Hand Speed will occur prior to the moment of impact, very close to the commit time in the swing when the wrists unhinge.

Bat Speed (Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Bat Speed (avg)
1 Seth Moore AZ Chandler 2022 1B 74.8 mph
2 Aidan Bever AZ Mountain Ridge 2022 C 69.6 mph
3 Dyllan Curthoys AZ Willow Canyon 2023 RHP 68.7 mph

5 Ethan Gibbs CA Canyon 2022 SS 68.0 mph
6 Jake Romaine AZ Desert Vista 2023 OF 67.8 mph
7 Nicolas Masciangelo AZ Mountain View 2023 OF 67.1 mph
8 Dom Harris AZ Desert Mountain 2024 OF 67.0 mph

Bat Speed: The observed speed of the sweet spot of the bat at impact. The sweet spot of the bat is measured six inches from the tip of the bat.

Rotational Acceleration (Peak & Average)

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (max)
1 Derek Kiepke AZ Liberty 2024 C 27.1 g
2 Jake Romaine AZ Desert Vista 2023 OF 26.1 g
3 Michael Caruso AZ Desert Vista 2023 RHP 22.2 g

6 Dom Harris AZ Desert Mountain 2024 OF 21.3 g
7 Dominick Scelfo AZ Casteel 2024 LHP 20.6 g
8 Collin Riff AZ Saguaro 2022 RHP 20.1 g

Rank Name State School Class Pos Rot. Acc (avg)
1 Derek Kiepke AZ Liberty 2024 C 21.3 g
2 Jake Romaine AZ Desert Vista 2023 OF 17.5 g
3 Kenan Harvey AZ Williams Field 2023 1B 16.7 g
4 Collin Riff AZ Saguaro 2022 RHP 16.7 g
5 Dominick Scelfo AZ Casteel 2024 LHP 16.5 g
6 Aidan Bever AZ Mountain Ridge 2022 C 15.9 g
7 Michael Caruso AZ Desert Vista 2023 RHP 15.1 g
8 Dom Harris AZ Desert Mountain 2024 OF 14.4 g

Body Rotation: A swing that has the appropriate relative contributions of body and bat rotations is an efficient and Powerful swing that maintains proper sequencing. An efficient baseball swing is one in which the body creates the initial movements, which is then transferred to the arms and out to the bat, thereby maximizing Bat Speed through this proximal-to-distal kinematic sequencing movement pattern.

On Plane Efficiency

Rank Name State School Class Pos On Plane Eff (avg)
1 DALTON DOUGLAS AZ Casteel 2025 1B 81 %
2 Dylan Cole AZ Notre Dame Preparatory 2024 LHP 81 %
3 Nicolas Barreras AZ Mountain Pointe 2023 OF 81 %
4 Dominick Scelfo AZ Casteel 2024 LHP 79 %
5 Aidan Bever AZ Mountain Ridge 2022 C 77 %
6 Derek Kiepke AZ Liberty 2024 C 73 %
7 Oscar De Luigi AZ Desert Mountain 2024 RHP 73 %
8 Nicolas Masciangelo AZ Mountain View 2023 OF 72 %

On Plane Efficiency: measures the percentage of your swing that was on the Swing Plane. An efficient swing gets On Plane early and stays on plane through contact. In an efficient swing, the hitter wants to build as much forward bat speed On Plane as possible, in the direction of the point of contact.
