2021 Sophomore State Games: South Region Analysis

The 2021 Sophomore State Games took place Saturday, October 30th and Sunday, October 31st at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona, FL. The event featured players from the 2024 class representing their region of North, South, East, or West Florida participating in a pro-style workout followed by 3 total games per region in front of the PBR Florida Scouting Staff.

South Region Analysis

Joshua Agriesti C / 1B / Western, FL / 2024

5-foot-8, 195-pound solid build. Solid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter displayed an exit velocity of 102 mph, Highest at the event. (76.16 mph bat speed average). (20.70 mph hand speed average). Starts in a tall balanced stance with a quick load, then uses a short leg kick. Bat speed is quick, shows a short upward swing plane and high finish. Was able to create some loud contact and found multiple barrels. Line drive approach. While catching, his best throw downs of the day reached a max velocity of 70 mph; had soft consistent hands, average footwork, and a lengthy transfer. recorded pop times of 2.20-2.38. Some flexibility and athletic setup. Decent accuracy to the bag, used an-over-the-top slot with a long arm action. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.77.

Frank Avila 2B / SS / Riviera Prep, FL / 2024

5-foot-7, 135-pound lean athletic build. Athletic during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 83 mph. (62.33 mph bat speed average). (18.07 mph hand speed average). Begins in a balanced stance with a slow controlled load, then uses a short stride. Bat speed was efficient, had a short swing plane and high finish. Found some barrels with some loud contact. Line drive approach. Solid in the infield, displayed a velocity of 78 mph; had a clean natural exchange, smooth athletic footwork, and soft consistent hands. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Showed a short arm action and a ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the base. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.07.

Reese Burton OF / RHP / Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2024

5-foot-11, 190-pound strong athletic frame. Solid in the box, Burton had an exit velocity of 92 mph. (63.97 mph bat speed average). (20.06 mph hand speed average). Begins in a tall balanced stance with a quick rhythmic load, then uses a short leg kick. Bat speed is explosive, uses a simple swing plane and high finish. He barreled up multiple balls with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Athletic from the outfield, he displayed a position velocity of 82 mph; has smooth feet, a clean exchange, and consistent hands. Fields the ball out front, movements laterally were athletic. Showed a high ¾ slot and a long arm action with consistent accuracy to the bag. During the event, clocked a 60 time of 7.02. Solid on the mound, using a long arm action he showed quick arm speed from a ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who shows easy effort. Displays even shoulders with an athletic balance point. Lands square with a falling off finish. Changeup (67-67 mph). Threw his fastball 75-78 mph; shows control around the zone and slight running action with heavy movement. (Max spin 1877; Avg 1723). Has a tight curveball (68-69) that showed in the zone command and gradual sweeping action. (Max spin 2098; Avg 2061).

Cam Carpenter OF / RHP / Dwyer, FL / 2024

5-foot-10, 165-pound lean athletic build. Solid at the plate, Carpenter's best exit velocity was 84 mph. (68.13 mph bat speed average). (20.09 mph hand speed average). Started in a tall athletic stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then used a controlled leg kick. Bat speed was electric, had a short upward swing plane and level finish. He found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap line drive approach. While in the infield, made throws at velocities up to 80 mph. Athletic In the outfield, has smooth rhythmic feet, a clean natural exchange, and soft consistent hands. Movements laterally were athletic and he fields the ball out front. Used a long arm action with a high ¾ slot while showing consistent accuracy to the base. Displayed speed and athleticism at the event, recording a 60 time of 6.77.

Zain Diaco C / 3B / American Heritage Plantation , FL / 2024

5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic frame. Solid in the box, Diaco's best exit velocity was 94 mph. (62.93 mph bat speed average). (21.87 mph hand speed average). Starts in a tall athletic stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then uses a short stride. Had explosive bat speed, short upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. In his round he found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. While catching, he recorded a position velocity of 72 mph during throw downs; has a clean natural transfer, soft hands, and athletic feet. consistently had pop times of 2.00-2.13. A lot of flexibility and clean flexible setup. From a ¾ slot, showed consistent accuracy to the base with a short arm action. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.08.

Jayden Dubanewicz RHP / OF / Stoneman Douglas , FL / 2024

6-foot-1, 150-pound long athletic frame. Projectable on the mound, showed above average arm speed with a ¾ arm angle and a long arm action. Tall-and-fall type pitcher who shows decent effort. Displays even shoulders with an athletic balance point. Lands square with a falling off finish. Threw his fastball 82-84 mph; shows decent command and slight cutting action with heavy movement. (Max spin 2097; Avg 1821). Has slurvey action and down in the zone control on his tight curveball (73-74). (Max spin 2071; Avg 1977). Throws a sharp slider (74-77) that shows in the zone control and sweeping action. (Max spin 2062; Avg 1975).

Devin Fitz-Gerald SS / RHP / Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2024

5-foot-9, 160-pound solid athletic build. Above average projectable at the plate, Fitz-gerald was ranked 2nd with an exit velocity of 101 mph. (70.38 mph bat speed average). (20.93 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a small rhythmic load, then uses a controlled leg kick. Bat speed is above average, uses a short swing plane and good extension on his finish. He found multiple barrels with tons of loud contact. Aggressive gap to gap approach. Above average projectable showed his live arm in the infield with position velocities up to 89 mph; showed next level consistent hands, smooth athletic feet, and a clean natural exchange. Gavin Gargiulo 1B / RHP / Coral Springs Charter , FL / 2024

6-foot-1, 180-pound solid athletic frame. Solid at the plate, the right-handed hitter had an exit velocity of 96 mph. (65.53 mph bat speed average). (20.40 mph hand speed average). Starts in a balanced athletic stance with a rhythmic load, then uses a short stride. Bat speed was quick, had a short upward swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Solid in the infield, recorded a position velocity of 78 mph; had choppy footwork, consistent hands, and a clean exchange. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Used a long arm action and a high ¾ slot while showing consistent accuracy to the base. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.07. Solid projectable on the mound, had a ¾ arm angle and a long arm action with good arm speed. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who uses easy effort. Has a consistent balance point and even shoulders. Lands square with a falling off finish. Changeup (76-77 mph). Dylan Howell C / SS / ESB Academy , FL / 2024

6-foot, 150-pound long lean build. Solid during batting practice, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 86 mph. (63.28 mph bat speed average). (21.19 mph hand speed average). Starts in a tall athletic stance with a tight compact load, then uses a short stride. Bat speed was quick, had a short upward swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels with some loud contact. Line drive gap to gap approach. Solid in the infield, his best throw was registered at 82 mph; had smooth footwork, soft hands, and a clean exchange. Laterally, movements were athletic and fielded the ball out front. Behind the plate, his best throw downs of the day reached a max velocity of 73 mph; showed smooth athletic feet, a quick clean transfer, and soft hands. recorded a pop time of 2.00-2.13. Narrow setup with tons of flexibility. Showed a long arm action and a high ¾ slot with consistent accuracy to the bag. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.27.

Trevor Malloy 3B / RHP / Santaluces, FL / 2024

6-foot, 158-pound long lean build. Solid at the plate, the right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 81 mph. (59.61 mph bat speed average). (18.67 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced athletic stance with a compact load, then used a short stride. Bat speed was efficient, used a short upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found lots of barrels with some loud contact. Line drive approach. Solid while in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 74 mph; shows choppy feet, a clean exchange, and consistent hands. Fields the ball deep, movements laterally were average. From a ¾ slot, showed decent accuracy to the base with a long arm action. Recorded a time of 8.02 in the 60-yard dash. Solid on the mound, showed a long arm action and a ¾ arm angle with consistent arm speed Tall-and-fall type pitcher and uses easy effort. Has an athletic balance point with even shoulders. Lands square with a falling off finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 70-73 mph; shows command around the zone and slight running action with heavy movement. (Max spin 1839; Avg 1723). Manuelle Marin SS / SS / Elite Squad Academy, FL / 2024

Tennessee commit. 6-foot-1, 175-pound strong athletic frame. Above average projectable in the box, Marin recorded an exit velocity of 93 mph. (70.11 mph bat speed average). (21.27 mph hand speed average). Began in a balanced athletic stance with a smooth rhythmic load, then used a controlled leg kick. Bat speed was explosive, used a short upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found multiple barrels with a lot of loud contact. Gap to gap approach. Projectable showed his live arm in the infield with position velocities up to 89 mph; had a quick clean exchange, smooth footwork, and soft consistent hands. Fielded the ball out front with athletic movement laterally. Showed consistent accuracy to the bag with a short arm action and a ¾ slot. Displayed speed and athleticism at the event, recording a 60 time of 6.94.

Aidan Nelson LHP / OF / Park Vista, FL / 2024

5-foot-11, 160-pound solid athletic frame. Solid on the mound, showing quick arm speed he used a long arm action and a ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and uses decent effort. Displays even shoulders with an athletic balance point. Lands square with balanced finish. Sat with his fastball at 77-80 mph; had tight running action and both sides of the plate control with heavy movement. (Max spin 1937; Avg 1842). He shows down in the zone command and tight slurvey action on his sharp curveball (65-67). (Max spin 1841; Avg 1733).

Brendan OHara RHP / 3B / Santaluces, FL / 2024

6-foot-2, 160-pound long lean build. Smooth at the plate, the right-handed hitter clocked an exit velocity of 85 mph. (64.36 mph bat speed average). (19.86 mph hand speed average). Starts in a tall open stance with a tight compact load, then uses a leg kick. Bat speed was efficient, used a short swing plane and level finish. Found some barrels with some loud contact. Line drive approach. Solid while in the infield, made throws up to 74 mph; shows rhythmic feet, a clean exchange, and consistent hands. Movements laterally were average and he fields the ball out front. Showed a ¾ slot and a short arm action with decent accuracy to the bag. Recorded a time of 7.58 in the 60-yard dash. Capable on the mound, using a long arm action he showed consistent arm speed from a ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher and shows easy effort. Balance point is tall with even shoulders during delivery. Lands open with a falling off finish. Produced a fastball that came in at 74-76 mph; had a heavy fastball that showed slight tailing action and command around the zone. (Max spin 2173; Avg 1999). Alex Rodriguez OF / 1B / Stoneman Douglas , FL / 2024

Jacob Sanjurjo OF / Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2024

Antonio Turco RHP / 3B / American Heritage Plantation, FL / 2024

6-foot, 180-pound solid athletic frame. Solid above average on the mound, showing quick arm speed he used a short arm action and a ¾ arm angle. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who uses decent effort. Even shoulders and an athletic balance point. Lands square with balanced finish. Changeup (77-78 mph). Produced a fastball that came in at 82-85 mph; showed hard running action and command around the zone with heavy movement. (Max spin 2156; Avg 1920). Robin Vergara SS / 3B / Stoneman Douglas, FL / 2024

Aaron Vetter SS / 3B / Calvary Christian Academy, FL / 2024

5-foot-11, 155-pound lean athletic frame. Solid at the plate, Vetter had an exit velocity of 93 mph. (68.81 mph bat speed average). (21.29 mph hand speed average). Began in a tall balanced stance with a quick controlled load, then used a leg kick. Bat speed is quick, shows a short swing plane and good extension on his finish. He found some barrels with some loud contact. Line drive gap to gap approach.
