LHP Farrington Leads No.15 Sandburg to Win

By Matt Yarber

No. 15 Sandburg defeated Joliet West 10-0 behind senior LHP Matt Farrington.  Farrington (5 IP, 1 H, 6 K, 3 BB) looked strong from the first pitch, as he retired the first eight hitters in a row.  Farrington, who is an unsigned senior, was sitting 80-83 for most of the game, and dialed it up in the fifth inning, when he topped out at 84 mph.  The 6-foot, 170-pounder works from a high 3/4 arm slot and showed command of the strike zone with his three pitches.

Farrington was able to keep hitters off balance all game with his sharp breaking ball with tight spin that was in 68-71 mph range. Farrington improved to 2-1 for the season and boasts a 1.875 ERA with 20 strikeouts.

Farrington was helped by the explosive offense, which was able to rough up Joliet West junior RHP Quinn Ahern. Sandburg put up 8 hits, led by David Cronin, who was 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.  Farrington also helped himself out going 1-for-2 with an RBI and run scored.

Ahern pitched well, as he sat 81-83 mph, yet his defense did not back him up as they committed three errors.
