South Suburban Open: Takeaways & Statistical Analysis

By: Peter Hamot

On Tuesday, June 21, the PBR Illinois staff hosted the South Suburban Open at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, IL. The event featured 19 players from around the state and allowed a number of prospects to pop in front of our staff.

Today, we'll look at the traditional stats leaders gathered by our staff inside this statistical analysis, as well as a few select players that stood out, found below.

One of the biggest winners from Tuesday's event was Vinnie Marvucic (Niles North, 2023). The left-handed hitter led the event in exit velocity, distance and hard-hit % - while also recording the top velocity from the outfield. Standing at a physical 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, Marvucic displayed a knack for the barrel with elevated contact to his pull-side - while also showing barrel control to take the ball up the middle and to the opposite field on a line. With reliable hands in the outfield, an arm that can reach up to 80 mph and his proven ability to hit, Marvucic is a name to know for coaches at the next level.

Sticking with the offensive winners, Michael Roberson III (Providence Catholic, 2024) was another name that stood out to our scouting staff. The high-waisted, 6-foot, 170-pound, right-handed hitter boasts all sorts of upside, both in his frame and to his game. His long/loose levers at the plate allowed him to create easy bat-speed with extension through the zone, repeating and controlling his limbs well while consistently finding the barrel to put the ball on a line. Though the power numbers might not be off the charts quite yet, it would be no surprise to see Roberson take significant strides as he starts to fill out his wiry and projectable frame. Defensively, Roberson took reps both at first-base and behind the plate, showing well in both spots. His hands work softly at both positions with athletic actions and fluid footwork, also pairing with his strong arm (T82 from INF, T78 from C), not to mention he led the event with a 2.02 pop-time.

SS/RHP Morgan Kosmos (Tinley Park, 2024) was a standout two-way prospect from Tuesday's event, showing legitimate potential on both sides of the ball. Standing 5-foot-5, 150-pounds, it would be foolish to write Kosmos off for his size because his game easily makes up for it. On the mound, the right-hander ran his fastball up to 83.3 mph with some eye-popping IVB (T34.9) while averaging 20.3 IVB throughout his 'pen. His fastball played with noteworthy horizontal movement, maxing out at 18 inches and averaging 13.4 inches. Kosmos also showed the ability to handle the bat, taking a quality round of BP and putting the ball on a line consistently from the right side with his short/quick swing.

RHP Jaryd Vence (Hampshire, 2024) stood out on the mound from the event. Standing 5-foot-10, 165-pounds, Vence has room to add on some strength in the coming years to his projectable build. The right-hander's arm plays with a clean arm circle into a 3/4 slot, moving with a fluid pace down the mound repeatedly. His fastball was the hardest in attendance, topping out at 84.4 mph and pairing with a tight 20/4 slider, 67-68 mph.
