On March 27, the PBR Illinois team hosted its annual Underclass Invitational showcase, bringing together a collection of the state’s best freshmen and sophomores in one place, The MAX in McCook, Ill.

We began our post-event breakdown in the days that followed this event, detailing the prospects who exited the event with their prospect arrows pointed way up inside of this Quick Hits post, as well as the traditional stats leaders inside the Statistical Analysis.

Today, we’re continuing our position-by-position analysis by publishing the scouting reports on each of the pitchers who made it out to this event. We began our positional breakdowns this week, analyzing our catchers, outfielders, and infielders.

It’s this collection of arms that helps highlight the extreme depth and rising underclass talent that’s budding in the state of Illinois. These pitchers made for one of, if not the, most exciting positional groups we witnessed this winter.

It’s headlined by sophomore RHP Zander Mueth (Belleville East, 2023), an Ole Miss commit who used this stage to propel himself up the national rankings, now ranked as one of the top-25 sophomores in the country, and Illinois’ No. 1. Here he showcased an authentic feel for three premium pitches, attached to low-90s velocity and a highly projectable 6-foot-4 frame.

Effingham’s RHP Josh McDevitt (2023; uncommitted) also enhanced his prospect stock at the Underclass Invitational. McDevitt reaches his premium velo from a smooth, easy delivery – and his 91.7 mph max fastball velocity was the event’s highest. He was able to demonstrate the feel to spin two separate breaking balls at advanced spin rates, and his changeup looks like a weapon on its own.

Sophomore RHP Matt Sauser (Normal University, 2023; Iowa commit) sat in the upper-80s here from a loose, quick, and clean arm action, though it’s his ability to spin advanced breaking balls that has him separating himself from his peers. His curveball, especially, features sharp, biting spin and swing-and-miss traits.

Wake Forest commit RHP Ryan Sloan (York, 2024) was the top-ranked freshman arm in attendance. He drives down the mound and releases the ball from a low height and ¾ slot that generates hard arm-side action and carry, and he was up to an 87 mph high here.
