3A Catholic Schools dominate City/County Tournaments

 County Finals

4A power Lawrence Central squared off against 3A power Roncalli in last night's Marion County championship game.  Roncalli got things going right away, scoring 5 runs on 4 hits in the top half of the first inning against Montgomery.  Roncalli?s Colin Hawk (2012) lead off the game with a single and later that inning Mulinaro had a three run double.  LC responded in the bottom half scoring 4 runs off of a Brad Korn 2 run homerun, and triples by Brandon Kreig and Jaylen Quarles.

In the third inning Roncalli added 4 more runs fueled by two LC errors and a 2 run double from Jason Simpkins.  LC responded in the bottom half, scoring 2 runs of their own.

Roncalli?s Alex Simpson worked 6 innings in relief, eventually settling in keeping the Bears off balance.  Collin Hawk (Roncalli), a 2012 SS put on a defensive display showcasing great range, and arm strength.  His highlight of the night came from a hard hit ball in the hole where he made a diving play and threw out LC?s Montgomery by a step.  Offensively Hawk showed the ability to handle 90+ mph pitching, spraying the ball to all fields.

Final: Roncalli: 10, Lawrence Central: 8

City Finals

Perennial 4A power Cathedral and City Champion the last 7 years took on 3A?s Chatard High School.  Cathedrals Dillon Peters got the start for the Irish.  Peter?s was consistently 90-93 with his fastball the entire night and featured a plus breaking ball, keeping the Trojan hitters off balance for most of the night.   Chris Jansen got the start for Chatard, proving he could be one of the best unsigned seniors in Indiana.  His fastball was 82-85mph with late run.  At one point 15 out of 20 hitters saw a first pitch strike.

Peters was perfect through three innings, but a jam shot single broke it up in the 4th inning. That was the only hit he would give up until the 6th. Chatard got the inning started with the leadoff man on base, however Peters quickly picked off the pinch runner. Peters then walked a guy and threw a wild pitch to put the runner on second. The next two batters singled up the middle to score two runs and that was all the run support Jansen needed. Peters struck out 15 batters in total.  Jansen pitched a complete game 3 hitter for the Trojans.   Clayton Gardner had a single, Daniel Soffera a run scoring double, and Will Soffera had an RBI single for the Trojans.

Final: Chatard 2, Cathedral 1
