The night cap on Wednesday featured the Liberty Lions facing off against the Patuxent Panthers for a bid to the 2A State Championship game to face off with the Glenelg Gladiators. We had ourselves a low scoring affair, which has been the "M.O." throughout the MPSSAA State Semifinals. Pitching and defense tends to win championships, and that held true in this one.
Liberty found themselves with the first real scoring chance in the top of the second, pushing runners to second and third with two outs. Liberty's Senior Matthew Becker ripped a fastball to the 6-hole that looked like a for sure two RBI single, however Patuxent's Senior shortstop Brady Powell (George Mason) had other ideas. Powell ranged quickly to his right, laying out and snatching the sharp grounder before jumping to his feet and gunning down Becker at first to end the inning. Liberty however would break through in the third, scoring on an overthrow to third base to take a 1-0 lead. Patuxent did not waste any time, tying to ballgame up in the bottom of the third, courtesy of an RBI single off the bat of Brady Powell (George Mason). After a Liberty error pushed across another run, Junior catcher Kaleb Elliott added another with a rocket double to left field, pushing the score to 3-1. Powell (George Mason) came on in relief on the bump and slammed the door on the Liberty offense, pitching the fourth, fifth and sixth innings giving up no hits. After a one out walk in the seventh, Powell handed the ball to Junior righty Ryan Moran to close it out; which he did so striking out the final two Liberty hitters to advance Patuxent to the 2A State Championship game.
The story of the night was Senior shortstop Brady Powell (George Mason). Powell impacted the game in all facets, adding an RBI single, playing lockdown defense at shortstop, and pitching 3.1 innings of no hit ball, striking out six out of the bullpen.
Patuxent will face Glenelg for the 2A State Championship on Saturday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
