Maryland Preseason Preview: Catcher Analysis

Over 30 players participated at this year's Maryland Preseason Preview at the Metrix Baseball Training Facility. Players were put through a pro-style workout that included bullpens for pitchers. Our PBR Maryland scouting staff was on hand along with TrackMan and Blast to record data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 6 catchers at the event. 

 

Catchers

Matthew Dove C / 3B / Severna Park , MD / 2024

Body: 5’11’’, 190 pounds. Strong, physical body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched, square stance at the plate. Quick toe-tap load into a shorter stride with some hand separation. Smooth, exaggerated back load with quick hands through the zone. Keeps his hands inside the ball well, utilizing some lower half involvement and a strong middle to opposite field line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. C - 67 mph. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.09 - 2.32. Gains some ground on throws and replaces feet well with clean, quick exchanges. 
Run: 4.44 Home to first base time.


Braeden Ford C / RHP / South River , MD / 2023

Body: 5’8’’, 155 pounds. Athletic frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, crouched, open stance at the plate. Exaggerated in to out elongated stride with solid weight transfer and some hand separation. Hands are direct to the ball, creating some bat speed through the zone with a level swing path. Hands stay inside the ball well with a strong two-handed finish and a solid middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Some gap to gap pop present. 
Arm: RH. C - 73 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.12 - 2.26. Replaces feet well with solid momentum towards the target. Quick, clean exchanges with throws that showed some carry and accuracy. 
Run: 4.87 Home to first base time.


Andrew Purcell C / 3B / Urbana, MD / 2023

Body: 5’9’’, 195 pounds. Big, strong, projectable frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, upright, square stance at the plate. Smooth back load with really nice hand separation into an elongated stride. Creates solid weight transfer and attacks the ball with intent. Quick hands and fast bat speed through contact with solid extension through and past contact. Barrel control is evident, utilizing the lower half consistently. Ball comes off the bat really well with a strong gap to gap approach.   
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Present strength and power into the gaps and alleys with more projection as he grows into the body. 
Arm: RH. C - 71 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.04 - 2.20. Replaces his feet well and gains ground on throws to second. Squares his shoulders well to the target with throws that showed accuracy and some carry. 
Run: 4.94 Home to first base time.


Luke Rivera OF / C / Urbana , MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 155 pounds. Athletic, lanky frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, crouched, slightly closed stance at the plate. Creates solid weight transfer with some hand separation and a smooth back load. Slight toe-tap load into a direct path to contact with a slightly uphill swing path. Solid extension through the zone, finishing with two-hands. Solid middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. C - 63 mph. OF - 68 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.23 - 2.39. Attacks the ball from behind the plate and replaces feet well. Quick, clean transfers with accurate throws to the target. Plays through the ball well in the outfield with quick, active feet. Fields the ball on the glove hand side with quick, clean exchanges and a slight crow-hop. 
Run: 4.53 Home to first base time.


Zachary Rose C / 1B / Richard Montgomery, MD / 2023

Body: 5’9’’, 150 pounds. Athletic
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched, closed stance at the dish. Quick back load with some hand separation and a shorter stride. Hands stay inside the ball well with some bat speed and a level swing path. Stays behind the ball with a relaxed approach, peppering balls consistently into the gaps and alleys during his BP rounds. 
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Gap to gap pop present. 
Arm: RH. C - 63 mph. INF - 63 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.16 - 2.33. Gains ground on throws from behind the dish and replaces feet well. Quick, active feet with clean exchanges and throws that showed some accuracy. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands in the infield. Creates solid momentum towards the target with clean exchanges.  
Run: 4.27 Home to first base time.


Ashton Siwald C / SS / Queen Anne's, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 165 pounds. Strong, athletic body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, upright, slightly open stance at the plate. Smooth back load with really nice hand separation and a shorter stride. Hands stay inside the ball well and attacks the ball with intent. Slightly uphill swing path with quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. Strong middle of the field line drive approach, with strength present into the gaps and alleys.  
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Gap to gap pop is present with more projected as the body continues to fill out.  
Arm: RH. C - 68 mph. INF - 73 mph. OF - 73 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.16 - 2.38. Gains ground on throws to second with quick, clean footwork. Replaces feet well and squares shoulders to the target. Clean exchanges and throws showed accuracy to the bag. Attacks the ball with quick, active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front with clean actions and a quick release. Fields the ball on the glove hand side from the outfield with quick feet and solid momentum towards the target. 
Run: 4.25 Home to first base time.
