Maryland Preseason Preview: Outfield Analysis

Over 30 players participated at this year's Maryland Preseason Preview at the Metrix Baseball Training Facility. Players were put through a pro-style workout that included bullpens for pitchers. Our PBR Maryland scouting staff was on hand along with TrackMan and Blast to record data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 8 outfielders at the event. 

 

Outfielders

Cristian Banks OF / OF / Archbishop Curley, MD / 2022

Body: 5’9’’, 145 pounds. Athletic body frame.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance with hands pre set at the top of the zone. Slight leg kick load with some hand separation and quick hands through contact. Stays behind the ball well, keeping his hands inside with good extension through and past contact. Slightly uphill swing path, finishing strong with two hands and a quick recoil. Solid middle of the field line drive approach.  
Power: 81 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. OF - 73 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a mid to high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball aggressively in the outfield fielding it out in front on the glove hand side. Small crow hop into a smooth glove tap exchange. 
Run: 4.32 Home to first base time.


Chris Baynard OF / 1B / Easton , MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 180 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable body frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, upright stance at the dish. Slight leg kick load with solid hand separation and a rhythmic approach. Creates solid extension through and past contact, staying behind the ball well with a slightly uphill swing path. Strong two-handed finish with a solid gap-to-gap line drive approach. 
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Some pull side pop present. 
Arm: RH. OF - 78 mph. INF - 70 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well in the outfield with quick, active feet.  Fields the ball out in front on the glove hand side with quick, clean exchanges and throws that showed accuracy. Plays through the ball in the infield with quick, active feet. Fields the ball out in front with soft hands.  
Run: 4.57 Home to first base time.


Carter Costango OF / 2B / Western STES, MD / 2022

Body: 5’8’’, 160 pounds. Strong, athletic body frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate. Smooth back load with hands pre set at the top of the zone. Solid hand separation with a small leg kick and quick hands through contact. Hands stay inside the ball well with some extension through and past contact. Solid middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Some gap-to-gap pop present. 
Arm: RH. OF - 74 mph. Throws with longer arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with quick, active feet. Fields the ball with soft hands on the glove side with clean exchanges and accurate throws that showed some carry. 
Run: 4.70 Home to first base time.


Adam Ippolito OF / C / Damascus, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 150 pounds. Lanky, athletic body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, crouched, open stance at the plate. Rhythmic toe-tap load with some hand separation and a direct path to the ball. Stays behind the ball well with a more level swing path and a solid middle of the field line drive approach. Creates solid extension past contact with a two handed finish. 
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. OF - 76 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Attacks the ball with quick feet and clean actions. Shows quick exchanges with short crow hop into accurate throws that showed carry. 
Run: 4.45 Home to first base time.


Keegan Johnson LHP / OF / Urbana, MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic, projectable frame. 
Hit: LHH. Hits from a tall, balanced, square stance at the plate. Smooth back load with really nice hand separation and a short, controlled stride. Stays behind the ball really well, with an uphill swing path. Quick hands and fast bat speed through contact, creating solid extension through and past contact. Keeps his hands inside the ball well with quick, whippy type barrel action. Ball comes off the bat well with a strong two-handed finish. Squared up balls consistently during his BP rounds with a solid middle to pull side line drive approach.   
Power: 94 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Power to the pull side is present with more projected as his body continues to fill out. 
Arm: LH. OF - 86 mph. Throws with longer arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball well with quick, fluid actions and soft hands, fielding the ball on the glove side. Smooth, clean transfers with a slight crow hop into strong, accurate throws that showed carry from the outfield. 
Run: 4.31 Home to first base time.


Tyler Little OF / 2B / Tuscarora, MD / 2023

Body: 5’7’’, 140 pounds. Athletic frame with some strength.
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, crouched, slightly open stance at the plate. Solid hand separation with a smooth back load and shorter stride into an uphill swing path. Stays behind the ball well, keeping his hands inside with a slight recoil in the swing. Solid middle of the field line drive approach.  
Power: 84 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Some pull side pop present. 
Arm: RH. OF - 77 mph. Throws with shorter arm action from an over the top slot. 
Defense: Plays through the ball with quick feet, fielding the ball mostly in the middle of the body. Quick, clean exchanges with solid momentum towards the target. 
Run: 4.84 Home to first base time.


Luke Rivera OF / C / Urbana , MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 155 pounds. Athletic, lanky frame. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, crouched, slightly closed stance at the plate. Creates solid weight transfer with some hand separation and a smooth back load. Slight toe-tap load into a direct path to contact with a slightly uphill swing path. Solid extension through the zone, finishing with two-hands. Solid middle of the field line drive approach. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. 
Arm: RH. C - 63 mph. OF - 68 mph. Throws with shorter amr action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.23 - 2.39. Attacks the ball from behind the plate and replaces feet well. Quick, clean transfers with accurate throws to the target. Plays through the ball well in the outfield with quick, active feet. Fields the ball on the glove hand side with quick, clean exchanges and a slight crow-hop. 
Run: 4.53 Home to first base time.


Ashton Siwald C / SS / Queen Anne's, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 165 pounds. Strong, athletic body type. 
Hit: RHH. Hits from a balanced, upright, slightly open stance at the plate. Smooth back load with really nice hand separation and a shorter stride. Hands stay inside the ball well and attacks the ball with intent. Slightly uphill swing path with quick hands and fast bat speed through the zone. Strong middle of the field line drive approach, with strength present into the gaps and alleys.  
Power: 87 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Gap to gap pop is present with more projected as the body continues to fill out.  
Arm: RH. C - 68 mph. INF - 73 mph. OF - 73 mph. Throws with longer arm action from a high three-quarter slot. 
Defense: Pop times ranged 2.16 - 2.38. Gains ground on throws to second with quick, clean footwork. Replaces feet well and squares shoulders to the target. Clean exchanges and throws showed accuracy to the bag. Attacks the ball with quick, active feet in the infield. Fields the ball out in front with clean actions and a quick release. Fields the ball on the glove hand side from the outfield with quick feet and solid momentum towards the target. 
Run: 4.25 Home to first base time.
