2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 1 State Semifinal - Grosse Pointe North vs Battle Creek Lakeview

EAST LANSING - Grosse Pointe North took advantage of 11 free passes and rode the five-hit shutout pitching of Jordan Arseneau to get past Battle Creek Lakeview 8-0 in the Division 1 state semifinals on Friday morning.

The unranked Norsemen walked eight times and were hit by three pitches in the game, with Grosse Pointe North jumping in front 2-0 in the first without the benefit of a hit. North then pushed across five in the second with Bryan Carney and Shane Armbruster producing singles and Parker O’Neill a double to go along with two walks and a hit-by-pitch.

That was more than enough for Arseneau, who scattered five hits along with two walks in the complete-game victory, sending Grosse Pointe North into the state finals against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The final run of the game came in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to O’Neill. Brennan Hill had the lone hit in the frame for Grosse Pointe North, which lost 2-0 in the state quarterfinals a year ago to eventual state champion Grand Blanc.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Arseneau only permitted hits in three different innings in the win, one in the Lakeview first on a Jake Kucharczyk double, and two in the third and fourth frames on singles by Bryce Plane and Zach Kucharczy in the third and Jayden Miller and Owen Baum in the fourth. The junior right-hander retired 11 of the final dozen batters faced, allowing only a two-out walk to Miller in the sixth.

BIG MOMENT: Three walks and a hit-by-pitch to the first four batters of the game set the tone when Drew Hill walked, James MacAuley was hit by a pitch and Jake Tedesco and Luke Babcock reached on walks to make it 1-0. It brought an end on the mound to Lakeview starting pitcher Jackson Haywood but the momentum never changed for the 15th-rated D-1 team in the state, which ends the season at 29-8.
