2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 2 State Semifinal - Grant Rapids Christian vs Grosse Ile

EAST LANSING - Grand Rapids Christian pounded out 17 hits and Kyle Remington threw a five-hitter to lead the Eagles to a 9-1 win over Grosse Ile in the Division 2 state semifinals on Thursday morning.

Remington, a Minnesota commit, struck out nine and did not permit a walk in the complete-game victory which sends Grand Rapids Christian into Saturday’s 9 a.m. finals against the winner of Forest Hills Eastern and Goodrich.

Clinging to a 2-1 advantage, Grand Rapids Christian broke the game open with a seven-spot in the top of the sixth.  The Eagles produced nine hits in the inning highlighted by two singles from Nathan Hedland, a Josh Winkle RBI triple, an Alec Koval two-run double and two-base hits by Remington and Ty Uchman.

The 14th-ranked team in the state, which has now scored 57 runs in six tournament games, took a 2-0 lead in the third on a Remington double, an Uchman run-scoring single and a Hedlund RBI fielder’s choice.

Grosse Ile scored its lone runs in the fourth when Henry Ford Junior College signee William Lowery singled in Cannon Kawadri, who reached on a one-out double.

Cannon Paul led the 17-hit attack by the Eagles going 4-for-4 while Remington had two doubles and a single and Uchman a double and two singles, driving in three. Koval hit a single and double and Hedlund a pair of singles, each bringing in two runs in moving Grand Rapids Christian to 27-8 on the season.

Kawadri and Tyler Garza, a Barton College commit, had two hits apiece for Grosse Ile, the 20th-rated D-2 team in the state.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Remington not only threw a five-hitter while striking out nine and surrendering just one run, the left-handed hitting eighth-rated junior in the state had three hits, scored a run and stole a base.

BIG MOMENT: After Grand Rapids Christian came up scoreless in the top of the first when Remington was thrown out at home on a bunt, Grosse Ile had the momentum and two on with one away in the bottom of the frame after singles by Garza and Kawadri. But a 4-6-3 double play grounder ended the threat and the next seven batters for Grosse Ile were retired by Remington. By then the Eagles were on top to stay.
