2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 3 State Final - Buchanan vs Detroit Edison

EAST LANSING - It was an exciting way to end the Michigan High School baseball tournament.

Bases loaded, two away in the bottom of the seventh and the fans on their feet. A strikeout brought an end to the final contest of the day, giving Buchanan a 3-1 win over Detroit Edison in the Division 3 championship game on Saturday night.

A leadoff single by Terrell Crosson and two out walks to Gregory Pace and Keith Smith filled the bases for Edison before Buchanan pitcher Macoy West recorded the strikeout to give the Bucks their first state title since winning the Class C championship in 1985.

Detroit Edison, which left runners in scoring position in five of the innings played, including the bases loaded in both the third and seventh frames, had nine LOB in the game while Buchanan stranded 10 runners.

Edison struck first with a run in the second on a double to left by Caleb Sanders and an RBI single from Marwynn Matthews. But Buchanan immediately tied the game in the third on a two-out walk to Code Preissing followed by a Matthew Hoover double.

The Bucks used a similar script to go in front in the fifth with a two-out walk to Preissing, a stolen base and a Hoover run-scoring double. The second-rated D-3 team in the state added an insurance run in the seventh when Preissing led off with a walk, went to second on an error and reached third on a fielder’s choice before coming home on a single by West.

Hoover and West finished with two hits apiece for Buchanan while Preissing reached base on three walks to score all three runs by the state champions.

Jordan Jones recorded a pair of hits for Edison, the 16th-ranked D-3 squad in the final state poll.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hoover not only drove in a pair of runs with two-out doubles, but was the winning pitcher allowing just one run on five hits, two walks and two HBPs while striking out eight in 5.2 innings on the mound.

DIVISION 3 MVPS: Hoover’s big game in the finals followed up a semifinal game that included two hits at the plate and the win on the mound with two innings of relief. The MVP honor is shared with West, who had the game-tying RBI in the seventh inning of the semifinals and a two-run triple in the eighth, before earning the save to go along with two hits and an RBI in the championship game.
