2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 3 State Semifinal - Detroit Edison vs Pewamo-Westphalia

EAST LANSING - Greg Pace pitched out of two-on and two-out jam in the top of the seventh to give Detroit Edison a 3-2 win over Pewamo-Westphalia in the Division 3 state semifinals on Friday.

Marwynn Matthews went the first six innings allowing six hits for the Pioneers, which will take on Buchanan in the state championship game Saturday at 5 p.m.

A single by Matthews, a throwing error and a fielding error gave Edison its first run of the game in the second before a Davion Williams RBI hit to right made it 2-0.

Pewamo cut the deficit in half in the fourth on hits by Brock Thelen and Trent Channell sandwiched around an Edison error. But the Pioneers, ranked 16th in the state in D-3, countered with one run in the bottom of the inning on a Matthews’ one-out single, a ground out and a two-out single to center by Kole Waterman.

Pewamo scored its final run in the fifth on a Tanner Wirth single, a walk to Ashtin Wirth and a throwing error.

Drew Nurenberg was the hard-luck loser allowing just one earned run on four hits with nine strikeouts and no walks in five innings before Gabe Miller pitched a 1-2-3 sixth.

It marked the third straight season that Pewamo-Westphalia just came up short of a state finals berth, losing in nine innings to eventual state champion Homer in the semifinals in 2019 and to Buchanan in the 2021 quarterfinals.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matthews not only was the winning pitcher, but the sophomore scored two of the three Edision runs and half of the four hits by the Pioneers. The eighth-ranked 2024 shortstop in the state was outstanding on the mound, permitting no earned runs on six hits and two walks while fanning eight, including three of the final four batters faced. Matthews threw 57 of 99 pitches for strikes.

BIG MOMENT: The tying run on third and the potential go-ahead run on first with two outs in the top of the seventh brings a tense moment to any game. That was the case in the state semifinals with Pace on in relief. A strikeout and ground out started the frame before Nate Simon was hit by a pitch. Blake Birchmeier pinch ran for the two-hole batter and moved up on a wild pitch before stealing third after Ashtin Wirth walked on a 3-2 pitch, his third free pass of the game. But the threat ended on an unassisted grounder to first baseman Kole Waterman for the final out of the contest.
