2022 MHSAA Tournament: Division 4 State Semifinal - Beal City vs Whitmore Lake

EAST LANSING - Beal City scored in every inning, putting up three runs in four of the frames played in a 14-4 six-inning run-rule win over Whitmore Lake in the Division 4 state semifinals on Thursday afternoon.

Tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the third, Beal City scored one to take the lead then tallied three runs in each of the next three innings to advance to the state finals on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of Gabriel Richard and Rudyard.

A Konnor Wilson bunt single plated Josh Wilson in the third giving Beal City the lead and the Aggies scored three in the fourth featuring RBI triples from Hunter Miles and Jack Fussman.

Miles and Josh Wilson had run-scoring singles in the fourth while Kaiden Andrews had a two-run double in the fifth for the top-ranked Division 4 team in Michigan.

Zane Gregg hit a single and Alex Di Dio a double in the two-run Whitmore Lake first and Di Dio also had a two-bagger in the two-run third.

Miles and Fussman each had three hits to pace a 17-hit Beal City attack, with Andrews, Cayden Smith, Josh Wilson, Konnor Wilson and Jake Gauthier each producing a pair of hits for the Aggies.

Di Dio had three of the four base knocks for Whitmore Lake, while the junior also scored two of the four runs tallied by the 13th-ranked team in the state in D-4.

Smith pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit while fanning six to pick up the win for Beal City.

HOT TAKES

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Talk about a complete game. Smith hit a single and double, scored three runs, drove in two, reached on an error and a walk and stole two bases. If that wasn’t enough, the sophomore right-hander pitched 2.2 innings of one-hit shutout relief to garner the victory, striking out six and not walking a batter.

BIG MOMENT: Locked in a 5-4 game in the last of the fourth, Smith walked on a 3-2 pitch and stole second. After a strikeout, Miles had an RBI triple to plate Smith. The lead reached 7-4 on a Wade Wilson sacrifice fly and a Fussman triple doubled up the Beal City advantage to 8-4 and the game was never in doubt with only one more Whitmore Lake batter reaching base.
