Division 3 Team Of The Week: Week 1 And 2 - Bradywine

NILES - A glimpse of what could be on the horizon started last week when Brandywine junior Owen Hulett tossed a no-hitter in a 10-0 win over Coloma. The performance has Brandywine being recognized as the Prep Baseball Report Division 3 Team of the Week.

“He did a nice job throwing strikes and mixing pitches while playing in the snow and mist,” Brandywine head coach David Sidenbender said. “He did a great job of controlling the strike zone and making them put it in play.”

Hulett also had a pair of singles to help an offense that was led by Jacob Sherrick, who hit a single and double driving in four. Sophomore Jaremiah Palmer added two singles to the offensive production of Brandywine.

“We’re pretty solid at all positions,” explained Sidenbender. “But we’re young with quite a few sophomores starting and we play in a tough conference with Buchanon returning most of their Final Four team.

“We’re talented, we just need to keep working hard on our hitting. I think we can compete with most of the teams we play, the key is having quality at-bats. With a young team sometimes you don’t do that. We need to be able to throw strikes and leave it all on the field.”

Catcher Carson Knapp and shortstop Tyler Deming are seniors back for another year of starting and are being counted on to provide leadership to the team according to Sidenbender, whose squad has had to deal with weather issues thus far.

“You never know from day to day whether you’re going to play,” Sidenbender explained. “I get questioned all day if we’re going to play or not. If not, we’ve just got to get stuff done inside. It’s important to keep things loose and when we get the chance to play, to go out there and leave it on the field. But it’s been tough to do this spring.”

Brandywine upped its record to 2-0 on Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over South Haven, with two more games on the schedule this week for Sidenbender, who is in his 22nd year of coaching, highlighted by a Final Four appearance in 2008.
