Division 3 Team Of The Week: Week 4 - Buchanan

BUCHANAN - A pair of one-run wins facing pitchers headed to play Division I college baseball has propelled Buchanan to an 8-0 season record and the honor of being the Prep Baseball Report Division 3 Team of the Week.

“They know they can beat anybody and that anybody can beat us,” explained Buchanan head coach Jim Brawley, who led the Bucks to the state semifinals a year ago before losing to eventual state champion University Liggett 2-0. “We’ve got to show up every day.”

Buchanan did just that on Saturday against Division 1 power Detroit Catholic Central, with 3-2 and 6-5 victories going against one pitcher headed to Alabama (Evan Haeger) and another to Ohio University (Trae Cassidy).

Matthew Hoover struck out 12 and hit a home run in the first game with Drew Glavin recording a save with a strikeout of the last batter, then winning the second game with a leadoff hit and eventually coming around to score in the seventh inning.

The trio of Hoover, Glavin and Macoy West headline the pitching staff.

“When they’re on the mound we feel we have a great chance,” Brawley said.

Hoover, who also plays second and short, is a Western Michigan commit, while West, who plays center field, is headed to Lansing Community College. Glavin, who is uncommitted, bats leadoff and is in center field or second base when not pitching.

“One thing that helps is these kids were freshmen contributors when we beat Divine Child and since then they’ve believed,” Brawley noted.

Another senior, Murphy Wegner, is an Albion commit who leads the way behind the plate.

“He just controls things,” Brawley said of Wegner. “He threw a guy out in the seventh inning of the 3-2 game with runners on first and third and then Glavine got the K.”

Wegner also had a walk-off single to win game two.

Junior shortstop Cade Preissing, one of the top returnees, had a home run to jump-start the first game victory with junior third baseman Connor Legault, Preissing and Wegner all with two hits in the doubleheader.

“We knew the pitching would carry us, we just had to figure out how to get on base,” Brawley said.

Senior Hunter Carrington is another contributor at first base and as a pitcher.

“When he throws strikes he’s good,” Brawley said.

A big week started with a DH against Berrien Springs before  participating in the Lakeshore Tournament on Saturday.

“Staying healthy and continuing to put forth the great work ethic is the key to success the rest of the way,” Brawley said. “We know that anybody can beat anybody, we just want to be playing our best ball come tournament time.”
