Division 4 Team Of The Week: Week 5 - Marlette

MARLETTE - After outscoring opponents 41-3 to win four games last week, Marlette is now 8-2 on the season and the Prep Baseball Report Division 4 Team of the Week.

“I have been pleased with the pitching depth that we have had this year,” noted Marlette head coach Dave Hayden. “We can probably go six pitchers deep and still feel confident they will hold down many of the offenses that we will play.

“Another strong point has been our hitting, with the team averaging .395 up to this point in the season,” added the Marlette mentor. “We’re getting contributions from all the players in our lineup.”

Ethan Marshall and Grant Roberson have been the main starters to date with Aaron Bower, Jason Tenbush, Travis Fuller and Brandon Anderson relievers.

“I have been very pleased with all of the pitching,” explained Hayden, who also gave credit to the valuable contributions on the mound beyond the top six hurlers on the team.

Marshall, a left-hander committed to Saginaw Valley State, is 3-1 with a 0.933 ERA while Roberson has a 2-0 record and a 2.154 ERA.

Fuller, Bower and Connor Kelly have been the top hitters, with Fuller at .640, Kelly .579 and Bower .423 with two home runs, including a grand slam during a 12-1 and 17-0 sweep of Mayville this week.

“I have been surprised about the contributions we have received from some of our younger players,” pointed out Hayden, whose Red Raiders also swept Vassar 5-1 and 7-1 in a 4-0 week. “Connor Kelly has been good at the plate and Collin Miller has provided some good fielding along with running well on the bases.

“I have also been pleased with the play of newcomers Westley Chapin and Quintin Sartin,” Hayden added. “Both of these guys haven’t played many innings, but when they have they made the most out of their chance to help the team.”

Games with Sandusky and Otisville Lakeville are on tap this week for Marlette, which a year ago advanced to the D-4 state semifinals before losing to eventual state champion Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Prep.

“The keys to success will be continuing to hit well along with keeping our key pitchers throwing well,” Hayden said. “I believe that if we hit well, we will have success because our pitchers should keep teams at the lower end scoring. I do believe we have done well in the field which has to continue.”

Hayden also points to the need for everyone, no matter what class, to stay on the same page while striving to be a team player..

“We have a great group of seniors, but in order for us to be successful we are going to need the younger players to continue to develop and fight for positions on the field,” Hayden concluded. “Competition can help to make us a very good team.”
