Speedy Pace Turns In Electric Performance At Super 60

MCCOOK, Ill. - And the fastest player running the 60 at the Prep Baseball Report Super 60 Pro Showcase is …. Greg Pace Jr.

The distinction of being the fastest brings an obvious boost to the interest pro scouts have in the Detroit Edison senior.

“Overall, this whole event was a success,” pointed out the second-rated 2022 outfielder in Michigan about his showing at the 20th annual event at The Max just outside of Chicago. “I would say that my performance stood out in numerous ways with the 60, fielding and the hitting.

“The highlights of the event for me was the 60 running a 6.35, and throwing 97 from the outfield during the fielding part of the event.”

The outfield velo was also the best among those participating at the premier showcase, with close to 100 pro scouts believed to be in attendance.

“Pace's explosive athleticism stole the show at the Super 60 as he blazed a 6.3 60-yard dash and pumped in upper-90s throws from the outfield,” related Shooter Hunt, vice president of scouting for PBR. “But even more than the raw tools, I loved the tunnel-vision he had to dominate and produce. I think his determination will drive the tools to even greater heights in coming years.”

The number 48 senior outfielder in the country was pleased with how he did but also understands the importance of absorbing all he could from being part of the showcase, which a year ago featured a trio of players from Michigan in Saborn Campbell, Luke Leto and Anthony Migliaccio.

“It was a helpful event but also more of a learning experience for me,” explained the 6-3 190-pounder, who is hoping to join Detroit Edison alum Werner Blakely in becoming an MLB draft pick. “It was an event that was surrounded by scouts and they were all looking for something specific.

“Performing in front of multiple scouts was very exciting,” added Pace, one of 67 players from across the country in attendance. “Yes, there were numerous people and sure it was nerve racking, but it was a great experience to be a part of.”

Interest in the 253rd-ranked 2023 in the nation was there after the University of Michigan commit not only had the best time in the 60 and top velo from the outfield, but also recorded a 101 exit velocity.

“Yes, pro scouts did talk to me after and during the event,” Pace admitted. “A lot of the talks were pretty short and basic, a lot of them introduced themselves versus some that asked when our school season schedule comes out.”

It was a memorable time for Pace, who hopes to join the long list of draft selections from past Super 60 showcases, with 23 first-round picks and 24 second-rounders being chosen over the years after attending the event. Among those selected in past drafts was Detroit Edison 2020 graduate Werner Blakely, a 2020 Super 60 participant who was a fourth-round choice by the Los Angeles Angels after the Super 60. Two years earlier, William English of Detroit Western International went on to be drafted in the fifth round by the Angels a few months following the 2018 event.

“Thank you for the experience!” concluded the 17-year-old from Southfield about an event that has seen more than 300 draft picks since the first Super 60 back in 2003.

Super 60 Performance

3/06/21

Gregory Pace Jr: OF/RHP, (2022) Detroit Edison Public School Academy, MI. Michigan Commit, 6-foot-2, 187-pound. Athletic at the plate, the right-handed hitter recorded an exit velocity of 96 mph. Started in an open stance with a tight load, then used a short stride. Bat speed is explosive, has an upward short swing plane and high finish. Created a lot of loud contact and found lots of barrels. Gap to gap approach. From the outfield, he showed plus arm strength by making throws to the infield at velocities up to 91 mph. Displayed speed and athleticism at the event, recording a 60 time of 6.39.

8/02/20

Ran a 6.48 sixty time on his first run followed by a ridiculous 6.37 time clocked by laser. In the OF has easy strides covering a ton of ground and threw 89 mph. Easy arm whip on his throws with carry. At the plate posted a 92 mph exit velocity driving several balls out of the yard. Big time athlete with a bag full of tools! Swiped two bags during game one.
