Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

Each week, the PBR Missouri staff will highlight players from across the state that put up strong performances over their games in that given time frame. These spotlights, mentioned within this ‘Diamond Notes’ piece, are submitted to us by filling out our ‘Diamond Notes’ form, which we’ll tweet out on Tuesday of each week. Coaches can also submit players to be included via email to [email protected].

This week’s edition of ‘Diamond Notes’ starts from ‘Opening Day’, March 17th, and extends through Wednesday, March 29th.

Learn more about a few names that are off to strong starts this spring below.

DIAMOND NOTES (WK 1 & 2)

Gavyn Beckner, Republic, 2023
Beckner has been a key contributor for a quality Republic team on both sides of the ball to start the 2023 season. Offensively, the senior Tiger is slashing .417/.462/.625 with four extra-base hits and 10 RBIs. As of the day we collected these statistics, Beckner struck out eight in his lone appearance of the season, allowing just an earned run and three hits.

Connor Beerman, OF, St. Dominic, 2024
Beerman has been a menace on the basepaths for St. Dominic, having already swiped 12 bags in their four games played. He’s batting .385 on the season while reaching base at a 52.9% clip.

David Broughton, MIF, Vianney, 2023
Broughton’s been on quite the power surge in Vianney’s undefeated start, slugging .733 to go along with a .333 batting average. The Quincy commit has doubled and homered three times, driving in 13 runs, too.

Tytus Cissell, INF, Francis Howell, 2024
The Missouri commit continues to produce for arguably the state’s best offense, slashing .409/.500/.591 while working primarily out of the leadoff spot. He’s doubled four times already and driven in four too, swiping six bags as well.

Kenton Deverman, LHP, Fort Zumwalt West, 2023
Deverman’s been his usual excellent self for the Jaguars, and the Evansville commit is picking up directly where he left off in 2022. Over 17 innings of work, Deverman has struck out 29 batters and walked three, pitching to an excellent .82 ERA in that span.

Gunner Ellison, Republic, 2023
Ellison has been a spark for Republic, leading the Tigers in runs scored (8) and stolen bases (6). He’s 7-for-18 (.389) on the season with eight RBIs, too.

Drake Gawer, Sullivan, RHP, 2025
Gawer, a sophomore, has been excellent over his three starts thus far for Sullivan. He’s hurled 15 frames, including a complete game, and is 3-0 with a 0.47 ERA and 0.40 WHIP. Gawer has struck out 34 batters and walked just three.

Adam Hachman, LHP, Timberland, 2023
Hachman’s swing-and-miss stuff has certainly showed in his three outings thus far. The state’s top-ranked prospect and Arkansas signee has struck out 18 batters over his 6 ⅓ innings of work.

Trace Harrington, Republic, CIF, 2024
Harrington was another uncommitted junior to impress our scouts this winter, and the 6-foot-3, 215-pound slugger is putting his power on display early. He already has six extra-base hits on the year, batting .354 with four doubles, a triple, home run, and seven RBIs.

Leo Humbert, OF, Francis Howell, 2025
Humbert’s been on an absolute tear offensively to start his sophomore year, which is what we saw from Francis Howell’s star all last spring, too. He’s slashing .450/.560/.900 with four triples, a double, and six RBIs over 15 at-bats.

Alex Jung, LHP, Liberty (Wentzville), 2024
Jung made two starts for the Eagles, totaling 10 dominant innings over those two appearances. He did not allow a hit in nine of them and surrendered just one earned run, striking out 12, while walking four.

Charlie Kilcullin, LHP, St. Dominic, 2024
Kilcullin has translated his success from the winter early into the spring, striking out 18 batters over his seven innings of work. He’s allowed only one earned run, and opponents are currently hitting .192 against him.

Myles Lozano, Republic, RHP, 2024
Lozano has been an extremely versatile option on the mound for Republic, starting a game, picking up a win in relief, and notching a save, too. In total, he’s thrown 10 innings thus far, striking out 10 and posting a 2.10 ERA to go along with a 2-0 record.

Evan Luke, RHP, St Dominic, 2024
Luke went the distance for the Crusaders on March 28th, leading St. Dominic to victory over a tough Westminster squad. He struck out seven in his seven inning affair, allowing just an earned run in a game his team won 2-1.

Kyle Manker, Pattonville, 2024
Manker’s been an asset out of the Pattonville ‘pen, yet to allow an earned run over his eight innings of relief work. He picked up a win in a five-inning relief outing against Clayton, and he threw well against Gateway Legacy early in the year as well. Thus far, Manker hasn’t allowed an earned run, punching out 10 batters while walking four.

Mason Mitchell, Republic, 2024
Mitchell’s swinging it well early, leading the Tigers in batting average (.533) while putting up high marks in the on-base department (.632) as well. He’s doubled twice, and he’s brought eight runs home, too.

Jace Reynolds, 3B, Southern Boone, 2024
Reynolds’ production from the middle of Southern Boone’s lineup has been key for the Eagles, as the uncommitted junior is batting .417 over his first six games. He’s driven eight runs in and scored nine of his own, while walking eight times too, and not yet striking out.

Carter Salter, RHP, Southern Boone, 2023
The Moberly CC commit is 2-0 on the bump to start the season, allowing three runs over 10 ⅔ innings of work, while striking out seven and scattering six hits.

Christopher Seaver, Russellville, 2023
The Indians have been one of the best ‘Small Schools’ this season, and their offense has been a huge reason why. Seaver’s played a key role in that, batting .474 with a 1.577 OPS over his first seven games. He’s totaled nine hits, including two doubles, two triples, and a home run. The Russellville senior has driven in 11 runs and scored 11 times himself, stealing a bag, too.

Logan Stewart, INF/RHP, St. Louis Patriots, 2023
Stewart’s been plenty productive on both sides of the ball for the ranked Patriots, who are scorching hot to start the season. He’s slashing .294/.489/.647 with five extra-base hits, including two home runs, and an area-high 16 RBIs. Stewart’s made three starts on the mound too, striking out 24 batters over 13 innings pitched with a 1.62 ERA to pair.

Curry Sutherland, INF, Logan-Rogersville, 2023
Sutherland’s been productive on both sides of the ball for a Logan-Rogersville squad that’s amongst the top ‘Small School’ teams in the state. Offensively, the Missouri State signee is 9-for16 with a triple, home run, and seven RBIs, and he hasn’t allowed an earned run on the mound over five innings, striking out 13 batters in the process.

Grant Trentmann, RHP, Washington, 2023
Still uncommitted, Trentmann hasn’t allowed a run over three starts in 2023, including a complete game effort. Over 18 innings, Trentmann has struck out 25 batters and walked just four, surrendering just four hits in total.

Zach Ward, OF, St. Louis Patriots, 2023
Few have swung it as well as Ward to start 2023, as the uncommitted senior is off to a .462/.580/.615 start. Over 39 at-bats, Ward has driven in 15 runs to go along with four extra-base hits. He’s walked (9) more times than he’s struck out (4) and he’s stolen four bags, too.

Cayden Wolfe, 3B, Duchesne, 2025
The sophomore infielder has been an offensive catalyst for a 6-2 Duchesne squad this far into the season. Over eight games, Wolfe is slashing .543/.677/.785 with eight RBIs, 12 runs scored, and seven stolen bases. He’s done all of that while also being an asset defensively at third base, flashing the leather multiple times already this spring.

Sam Wyrick, INF/RHP, Helias Catholic, 2024
Wyrick was another huge winner from our winter circuit, and he’s been a catalyst for a Helias Catholic squad that’s off to a strong start. He’s 12-for-20 to start 2023 with a 1.430 OPS that includes three doubles, seven RBIs, and eight runs scored. Wyrick’s also been dynamic on the mound, striking out 16 over 10 innings of work, pitching to a 0.70 ERA with a .171 batting average against.
