MO Underclass Games: Catchers Edition

Prep Baseball Report Missouri hosted the Missouri Underclass Games showcase on June 8th at Atkins Field in Columbia.  The event was attended by prospects coming from the 2023 and 2024 classes and today we take a look at the catchers that attended.  

Carson Hawkins posted the top 60 time amongst the catchers with a 7.03 laser timed 60.  The top velocity reading out of the crouch belonged to Cannon Stuckey at an impressive 81 mph with Cole Lemons right behind him at 78 mph.  Stuckey also posted an impressive 1.89 pop time with Max Eastman putting up an impressive 1.93.  Stuckey also posted the top exit velocity from Trackman during the BP session with an eye-popping 101 mph with Eastman also posting an impressive 97 mph.

Peyton Braile C / 1B / Liberty, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C

Body: 6-foot-1, 200-pound physical and mature build with present strength.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and vertical bat angle.  Slight waggle rhythm with the hands to get them into the slot.  Simple stride with linear drive with the back knee working towards the front knee.  Plays the ball out in front of the plate with a pull side approach.  Slight stiffness in the lower half when getting extended.  Rotational bat path with weight transferred onto front foot at contact.

Power: 88 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-77 mph.  Pop Times:1.94-2.06.  Short ¾ arm slot with short arm action and good hand speed.

Defense: Behind the plate shows strong wrists and good body sway on receiving the ball.  Works quickly out of the crouch with hips and shoulders getting turned in unison.  Clean transfers out of the glove on mostly accurate throws to second.  Blocks with one knee in the dirt and good posture with the chest.

Run: 8.00 runner in the 60.

Max Eastman C / 1B / Ladue, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C

Body: 6-foot, 250-pound mature and strong frame with current strength especially in the lower half.


Hit: Switch.  At the plate shows the ability to repeat the same swing mechanics from both sides of the plate.  Hands and load work quickly into place coming from a neutral stance and upright posture.  Short stride with rotational back side turn.  Strong rotational swing with heavy shoulder tilt trying to work the ball up in the air.  Has current strength at contact especially to the pull side.  Works the lower half underneath the ball well to help with matching plane.

Power: 97 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-72 mph. Pop times: 1.93-2.02.  ¾ arm slot with a short and quick arm action.

Defense: Behind the plate prefers to receive the ball with one knee in the dirt and shows strong wrists at the catch.  Feet and hips work quickly out of the crouch on throws to second with a slightly open stance at the throw.  Shows solid blocking techniques with hips and feet working quickly to the ground with good upper body posture.

Run: 7.86 runner in the 60.

Ethan Ferguson C / RHP / Vianney , MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 5-foot-9, 153-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with an open stance and hands set above shoulder height. Hands and load work quickly into place with a slight wrapped barrel angle.  Arm bar posture with the lead arm.  Hands work quickly through the zone with a whirlwind finish at extension.  Flat bat path with level swing.  Works to a soft front side with short back side drive with the lower half.

Power: 84 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-70 mph.  Pop Times: 2.08-2.26.  ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.

Defense: Behind the plate shows strong receiving skills with an athletic base.  Shows solid blocking techniques with the ability to shoot the hips into place on balls well out of the zone.  Stands up out of the crouch and throws off a firm front leg.  Hips and shoulders get turned in unison towards the bag on throws.

Run: 7.51 runner in the 60.

Carson Hawkins C / OF / Northwest R1, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C

Body: 5-foot-7, 150-pound lean and developing frame with room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and upright posture with a flat bat angle.  Uses a two tap stride with short weight transfer into the back side.  Lower half works short and linear through the zone to a firm front leg.  Rotational upper body with developing bat speed and hand strength.  Flat barrel path and line drive approach especially to the pull side.

Power: 84 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH. C-66 mph.  Pop Times: 2.08-2.26.  High ¾ arm slot with a long arm action and release.

Defense: Behind the plate works with quick feet and hips coming out of the crouch working far into the right handers batters box.  Large movements with the body when receiving with a stiff wrist.  Gets into good blocking posture with hips and feet working down to the ground with good upper body posture.

Run: 7.03 runner in the 60.

Cole Lemons C / RHP / Notre Dame, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 6-foot-1, 177-pound long and lean build with good projection and room for added strength and size in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and athletic posture with a flat bat angle.  Leg kick stride to a neutral base with good weight stack onto the back leg.  Good linear drive from the backside into a firm front leg.  Rotational upper body with hands still working to the inside part of the ball.  Shows the ability to manipulate the posture to match plane with the pitch down in the zone.  Hands work quickly through the zone with good extension and maintains balance throughout the swing.

Power: 91 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-78 mph.  Pop Times: 1.94-2.02.  High ¾ arm slot with a clean/quick arm action.

Defense: Behind the plate showed good footwork and rhythm when coming out of the crouch with throws mostly accurate to the bag with good carry.  Pre turns the body into the throwing position.  Shows good blocking technique with flexible hips and good upper body posture. 

Run: 7.38 runner in the 60.

Tyler Leonard C / OF / Staley, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C

Body: 5-foot-11, 188-pound athletic and strong build.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and upright posture.  Heavy bat tilt forward to get the hands in rhythm.  Short weight stack on the back leg with a slight drift into a firm front leg.  Hands works quickly through the zone on a flat path and uses a line drive approach.  Shows some strength at contact.  Works mostly from a narrow base and maintains balance throughout the swing.  Shows the ability to get extended on pitches up in the zone.

Power: 93 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH. C-73 mph.  Pop Times: 2.02-2.13.  High ¾ arm slot with a clean and quick arm action with good hand speed.

Defense: Behind the plate prefers to receive the ball with one knee in the dirt and has strong wrists at the catch point.  Feet and shoulders work well together in unison when coming out of the crouch with clean transfers.  Throws to second had good accuracy with slight fade at the end.  Gets into good blocking position with proper posture.

Run: 7.14 runner in the 60.

Zach Liggett C / RHP / Rockwood Summit , MO / 2023

Body: 6-foot-1, 200-pound physical and mature frame.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a neutral stance and athletic posture with a vertical bat angle.  Uses a two tap stride with strong weight shift into the backside.  Gets good backside push in a linear direction to a softer front leg.  Has quick hands through the zone with a strong top hand.  Slight uphill bat path and line drive approach.  Swings hard but maintains balance throughout the swing.  Shows some strength at contact.  

Power: 88 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-73 mph.  Pop Times: 2.02-2.13.  High ¾ arm slot with a short arm swing and release.

Defense: Behind the plate prefers receiving the ball with one knee in the dirt.  Receives with good glove action and a lot of head movement.  Works well out of the crouch with hips and shoulders turning in unison.  Clean exchanges out of the glove with accurate throws to the bag.  Solid blocking technique with good hip flexibility and proper upper body posture.

Run: 7.68 runner in the 60.

Gabriel McLevain C / RHP / Cooter, MO / 2024

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic frame with present strength and room for more in the future.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a narrow stance and upright posture with a vertical bat angle.  Short knee knock stride to a narrow base with slight sink into the backside for load.  Hands work long through the zone with quick path and good overall bat speed.  Does a good job of getting extended on the pitch inside.  Slight uphill bat path with a line drive approach.  Scissor style back leg movement with developing balance.

Power: 93 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-77 mph.  Pop Times: 2.09-2.21.  ¾ arm slot with a whippy arm action.

Defense: Behind the plate shows a quick release out of the glove with good arm strength.  Shoulders turn towards target with lower body working more open to the third base side.  Developing strength in the wrists on receiving.  Slightly stiff in the hips with blocking but gets into a solid position with the upper body posture.

Run: 7.30 runner in the 60.

Cannon Stuckey C / RHP / Lafayette, MO / 2023

Positional Profile: C/RHP

Body: 6-foot, 205-pound physical and sturdy frame with current strength.

Hit: RHH.  At the plate starts with a slightly open stance and wider base with a vertical bat angle.  Short and simple stride with strong weight shift into a firm front leg.  Very good overall bat speed and quick hands through the zone.  Level bat path and a line drive approach.  Already showing very good strength at contact and has more power potential in the future.  Swings on balance with strong rotational swing. 

Power: 101 mph exit velocity. 

Arm: RH.  C-81 mph.  Pop Times: 1.89-1.93.  High ¾ arm slot with good hand speed and quick release.

Defense: Behind the plate shows strong wrists and a feel for pitch framing.  Feet work quickly out of the crouch with shoulders getting turned in unison.  When the footwork and exchange match up the throws come out very clean and quick.  Shows a solid blocking technique with flexibility in the hips and proper posture in the upper body.

Run: 7.12 runner in the 60.
