Super 60 Flashback: Tanner McDougal

This prestigious, invitation-only event features only the top draft prospects in the Prep Baseball Report’s expansive coverage area. Over the last 19 years, the Super 60 has become the most heavily scouted preseason event for potential draft picks. The primary purpose of the Super 60 is to give professional area scouts, cross-checkers and scouting directors a head start to the high school season. The event is for draft-eligible Class of 2022 prospects. 

The Super 60 Pro Showcase has hosted some of baseball's top prep talent while serving as the first stop along the year's MLB Draft circuit. Last year’s draft was a banner year for former Super 60 participants, as C Henry Davis (Fox Lane, NY) was selected No. 1 overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Davis attended the 2018 Super 60 showcase, alongside RHP Ryan Cusick (Avon Old Farms, CT), who also heard his name called in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft. Additionally, four Super 60 alumni were drafted within the first three rounds of this year's draft: SS Noah Miller (Ozaukee, WI), RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (Saginaw Heritage, MI), C Carter Jensen (Park Hill, MO), and 3B Alex Binelas (Oak Creek, WI). 

In total, the Super 60 hosted 29 players who were ultimately selected in the 2021 MLB Draft. The '21 draftees soon joined the likes of Gavin Lux (Kenosha Indian Trail, WI), Evan White (Gahanna Lincoln, OH), Jarred Kelenic (Waukesha West, WI), and Alek Thomas (Mount Carmel, IL) as former, recent Super 60 participants who have since begun to thrive in the pro ball setting.

Nevada's 2021 Super 60 representative, Tanner McDougal, got to show his stuff on one of the most prestigious stages in the country, holding his own among the top MLB Draft prospects in the country. In the year leading up to the event, McDougal saw his stock surge with his arm strength mirroring his physical development, running it up to a PBR Verified 96 mph, continuing in that velocity range, but also showing off elite level TrackMan numbers that put him at or near the top of almost each of the event's pitching metric category. These numbers helped solidify him as a legitimate professional prospect where short few months later, the Silverado product heard his name called in the third round of of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago White Sox.

Shooter Hunt - PBR Nevada ProCase Notes

McDougal was the most interesting arm of the day and kicked things off by going head-to-head against the top hitting prospects in the state. At 6-foot-5, 200-pounds, the big right-hander has a frame that scouts dream of including wide, broad shoulders, long limbs, and room for much more strength to be developed in the future. He worked exclusively out of the stretch over the course of two innings, and was more effectively wild in the zone than in command of his pitches. The arm works freely through a continuous stroke with impressive quickness out front as he delivers from a high ¾ slot while getting quality extension out front. The fastball jumps on the plate thanks to high spin rates that ran up close to 2600 rpm on the heater. He moves efficiently throughout, and there is a chance that he continues to see the velocity increase as he gets stronger. While the breaking ball was inconsistent in shape, it tunneled best when thrown with depth off the fastball though the sharpest break came in 10/4, slurve-like shape at 74-76. The pitch is tightly spun with upwards of nearly 3000 rpm, and there is obvious aptitude for spin that future pitch design sessions will allow for likely immediate advancements. Intriguingly, McDougal also showed quality feel for a faded changeup, thrown for strikes at an average speed of 86.59 mph, that he comfortably threw to right-handed hitters. McDougal competed and was eager to attack each hitter while entertaining challenges. His upside is likely to be valued moving forward, and given the friendly Trackman metrics, MLB clubs will be monitoring him closely.
