2013 Prospect Watch: Jim Orwick (Findlay)

Northwest Ohio may have the most Division I pitching prospects for any area of the State in 2013.

With several talented right-handers such as Robert Zeigler (Defiance), Jordan Grosjean (Oregon Clay), Cory Wilder (Lima Shawnee) and Ryan Smoyer  (Ostego), it is easy to over look the area’s top left-handed arm, Jim Orwick of Findlay.

Orwick, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound southpaw, is quickly rising up the recruiting boards.

After playing in a tournament at Notre Dame this summer, Orwick came back for their late summer camp.

With a fastball registering 85-88 mph, Orwick was invited back for an unofficial visit during Notre Dame’s first football game and remains in close contact with their staff.

In addition, he is hearing from Cincinnati (unofficial visit set for November), Miami of Ohio, Wright State, Michigan, Michigan State, Kansas, and Winthrop.

While he likely projects as a pitcher at the next level, Orwick is also a talented outfielder. Swinging from the left side, he also runs a 6.7 60-yard dash.

Due to his hard work in the classroom, the talented prospect holds a 4.06 accumulative grade point average and currently ranks 30th out of 418 students in his graduating class.

While it is early in the process, Orwick says, “I am looking for a school with a good academic reputation as well as a school that is competitive in baseball.”

Last spring, Orwick pitched 46 and 1/3 innings compiling a 5-3 record. He struck out 55 batters and managed a 1.20 earned run average.

This fall, the talented athlete is playing football. However, with the football season coming to a close, he plans on attending the Top Prospect Invite Only Showcase at Sinclair Community College.

This coming summer, Orwick will pair with fellow Northwest Ohio pitching prospects Cory Wilder, Ryan Smoyer, and Matt Zmuda as members of the Ohio Elite.
