Division I Team Of The Week: Week 4 - Moeller

CINCINNATI - When you enter the season ranked best in the state while also getting recognition in the national ratings, expectations can sometimes be tough to meet. Moeller and head coach Tim Held are doing their best to obtain the high outlook given to the Crusaders.

A 14-2 record, with 10 straight wins, has more recognition coming to Moeller, the Prep Baseball Report Division I Team of the Week.

“Expectations were high with all the commitments we have,” admitted Held, whose Moeller roster includes college commits to schools like Ohio State, Air Force, West Virginia, Wright State, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, George Mason, Kentucky, LSU and Missouri. “The players have met those expectations and are handling the season very well.”

This past week Moeller beat LaSalle 4-2 and 10-0, Dixie Heights 12-5 and Olentangy Orange 8-2.

Conlan Daniel, a junior recruit of Wright State, belted a pair of home runs while Kellan Klosterman, Sam Scuglik and Carson Marsh combined on a two-hitter to highlight the performance of the Crusaders last week. Klosterman, Zion Theophilus and Marsh had combined on a no-hitter to open the season against Strongsville.

Klosterman, a junior committed to Notre Dame, is 2-0 with a 2.43 ERA, fanning 33 in 23 innings. Marsh, a senior signed with Cincinnati, has two saves and has not allowed an earned run in six games. Theophilus, the 22nd-rated sophomore RHP in the nation who is an LSU commit, has a 3-0 record with 25 Ks in 20.1 innings with a 0.34 ERA while Scuglik, an uncommitted junior right-hander, has thrown in five games with a 1-0 mark.

“Their maturity in tough situations has been great this season,” Held pointed out about what has been a pleasant surprise to date. “The lineup has produced from top to bottom which has been great and picked us up in quite a few games this year.”

Toby Hueber, a George Mason signee who is 4-0 pitching, is batting .429 on the season with four doubles and three triples to spark an offense which has a team average of .316. Hueber leads the team with 19 RBIs, 19 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. Additionally, the 38th-ranked senior in the state produced his 55th career stolen base this past week to break the Moeller school record for a career.

Daniel is hitting .414 with 14 runs scored, Nathan Manley .367, Clay Burdette .343 with 12 runs, and CJ Richard .283 with 17 runs and 12 stolen bases. Manley is a Wright State commit like Daniel, while Burdette and Richard are Ohio State signees. Manley is the third-rated senior catcher in the state, Burdette is the third-rated 2023 shortstop in Ohio, and Richard the number two 2023 outfielder in the state.

“We need to continue to have great at-bats and play great defense to go along with the solid 12 runs and pitching we are getting,” Held said of what he believes are the keys to continuing the success thus far this season, with the lone defeats coming against Vauxhall Academy, Canada (8-6) and Regis Jesuit, Co. (6-5).

Two games with Elder and a matchup on Thursday with Conner, Ky., are on tap this coming week for the top-rated Division I squad in Ohio, which is third in the PBR Midwest rankings for teams in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Big regular season games are also ahead, with Moeller home to a PBR High School Classic on May 6 with Hillard Darby the opponent, before the Crusaders take on host Vandalia-Butler in a PBR High School Classic May 13.
