Division II Team Of The Week: Week 1 - Chaminade-Julienne
DAYTON - When you combine strong pitching with solid hitting success usually follows. That was the case for Chaminade Julienne, the Prep Baseball Report Division II Team of the Week.
“Our expectations every year will be to compete for a GCL title and play our best baseball at the end of the year for a possible tournament run,” CJ head coach Todd Barhorst said. “To this point we have played well in all phases of the game, and we will need to keep that up as the season goes on.”
The Warriors defeated CHCA 8-2, Versailles 13-5, Wyoming 7-1 and Shawnee 11-1 last week to start the season 4-0.
Jackson Frasure allowed just one baserunner through six innings with eight strikeouts against CHCA to lead the way on the mound. Freshman Isaac Sullivan picked up a win in his first career start permitting one run in five innings against Wyoming while junior Cam Brewer threw four frames of one-hit ball to get the victory versus Shawnee at Day Air Ballpark.
But it is at the plate that Barhorst found even more satisfaction.
“I’m surprised just how well we’ve been hitting,” admitted Barhorst. “We scored seven or more runs in each game and we had 15 extra base hits in four games.”
Sullivan hit .700 in the first week of play with a pair of doubles while Frasure had an on-base percentage of .562 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs. Senior Patrick Gonter-Dray and Charlie Hoagland, the 21st-rated sophomore in Ohio, both hit .500, Gonter-Dray with four RBIs and Hoagland three in addition to four stolen bases.
There was even more run production from a pair of college commits.
Wright State recruit JP Peltier and Bluffton signee Jacob Brunner both batted. .429 with Peltier, the fifth-ranked 2023 shortstop in the state, hitting four doubles and two triples while driving in five. Brunner had eight RBIs with three two-baggers and a homer.
“We will need to continue to give quality at-bats against the toughest opponents,” noted Barhorst. “If we can cut down offensive strikeouts, defensive errors, and walks allowed, we will be in good shape.”
A tough week ahead started with a loss to Badin on Monday, with a rematch ahead along with games versus Valley View and Miamisburg.
“My guys have worked extremely hard and have prepared themselves well for this season,” Barhorst concluded. “We have battled through injury and obstacles, and every player has been ready to step up for the team. Win, lose or draw, I am proud of this team and happy to be able to coach this group of players. I can’t thank them enough.”A Look Back At The 2022 Season:
