Division II Team Of The Week: Week 2 - Badin

HAMILTON - A senior class of 11 strong has Badin primed for a big season and the Rams are living up to the billing with a 7-0 record entering play this week.

The Prep Baseball Report Division II Team of the Week made it eight straight wins to open the season with a win over Covington Catholic on Monday, while a huge Greater Catholic League contest is on tap Thursday against Chaminade Julienne.

“Our senior class has enjoyed tremendous success throughout their time in our program capped off with back to back trips to the state Final Four,” noted head coach Brion Treadway, the top-rated team in the new PBR Division II rankings. “We graduated some key players off last year's team but the expectations have remained the same for this group.”

An 11-2 GCL victory over Alter and a 2-1 extra-inning win over Centerville last week kept Badin unbeaten behind a strong pitching staff led by a trio of seniors.

Nik Copenhaver, the 154th-rated 2023 right-handed pitcher in the nation, has struck out 13 in seven innings on the mound. The Washington State commit, the fourth-ranked senior RHP in Ohio, is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

A pair of Lincoln Trail commits have also not permitted an earned run this season for the Rams, the fourth-rated team in Ohio in the PBR Power 25. Justin Hoevel, the 110th-rated senior righty in the state, has fanned 23 in 16 innings with a 3-0 record while left-hander Aidan Van De Hatert is also 1-0 with a save, recording 11 Ks in 7.1 frames.

Lucas Moore has been impressive at the plate so far, with the 74th-ranked senior outfielder in the country batting .500. The number one 2023 OF in Ohio, who has signed with Louisville, has scored nine runs, driven in eight and stole eight bases while producing six extra-base hits.

Another Lincoln Trail recruit, Rodney Rachel, the eighth-rated senior outfielder in the state, is hitting .304 while Brycen Fox, the 30th-ranked 2023 OF in Ohio and a Mount Union commit, carries a .409 average.

“We had some injuries in the offseason and are starting new players at every infield position this year,” explained Treadway. “Jimmy Nugent played nearly every inning at catcher last year so we have spent the early part of the year battling it out for that spot as well. Pitching has played a key role in our early success.”

Frontier CC signee Corbin Ausman, the 75th-rated senior RHP in the state, and catcher Sean Miller, a Manchester University recruit, bring the number of college commits on this year’s Badin roster to nine. Reese Anzalone and Ashton Hopewell are the other seniors on the Badin 2023 roster.

Sophomores Kyle Anderson (.333), Kade Bowling and Chase Luebbe (.364) along with freshman Chandler Taylor and junior pitchers Matty Helms and Tyler Verdin have been other big contributors this season.

“We hope to continue to get good starting pitching and for the game to slow down for our guys new to varsity,” added Treadway, whose Rams cap off this week with a GCL game on Friday against Dayton Carroll.
