Division II Team Of The Week: Week 4 - Unioto

CHILLICOTHE - Four wins in four days pushed Unioto to 13-1 on the season and with it the honor of being the Prep Baseball Report Division II Team of the Week.

“We expected to have success this season and have mostly lived up to our expectations due to our strong pitching and hitting depth,” noted Unioto coach Nick Rose. “We know we haven't played our best baseball yet and hope to find out what our ceiling is come mid-May into early June.”

Four players batted .400 or better in wins this week over Westfall, Chillicothe, Adena and Waverly which pushed the winning streak for the Shermans to 10 games.

Keegan Snyder led the way with a .750 mark, including his first varsity career home run, to push his season batting average to .667 with 19 RBIs.

“He should be on every college’s radar,” Rose said of the sophomore catcher.

Leadoff hitter Micah Geise, the 16th-rated senior outfielder in Ohio who is committed to Lake Erie, batted .556 on the week with a .765 OBP and is now averaging .589 on the season with four triples, 25 runs and 12 stolen bases. Sophomore KB Perkins and Andrew Griffin, the 67th-ranked 2023 outfielder in the state, both hit .400 on the week, Perkins moving to .426 on the year with 20 RBIs and Griffin .432 with seven extra-base hits and 19 RBIs.

More contributions this season have come from juniors Dylan Grubbs (.423), Owen Link (.400) and Landyn Patterson (.423).

“I have been very pleased with the contributions we are getting from 1-20 throughout our entire roster,” Rose noted. “We have had several guys step up in key moments and excel in their roles. We would not be 13-1 without every guy on our roster staying ready to contribute.”

More help is coming from Isaiah Leeth, the 26th-rated senior right-handed pitcher in Ohio.

“He has hit well and is beginning to throw after a minor injury earlier this spring,” Rose said of the Ohio State commit.

Link, Griffin, Grubbs, Maverick Frump and Ashton Crace all pitched well during the week according to Rose, helping the team ERA improve to 2.14 on the year. Link is 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA, striking out 27 in 16 innings while Frump, a 6-5 junior RHP, is also 3-0 with a 1.38 ERA, fanning 27 in 20 frames. Grubbs has a 1.27 ERA in relief.

While a Tuesday matchup has been postponed with once-beaten Washington Court House, a team Unioto defeated 9-6 earlier this season, a big week is ahead with games against Paint Valley, Piketon, Huntington and Southeastern.

“Our key to success is fighting complacency and understanding that our goals and biggest tests are all in front of us,” explained Rose, whose Shermans are ranked fifth in the state in Division II and 17th in the PBR Power 25 Ratings. “As long as we continue to maintain a growth mindset we will be successful.”
