Division IV Team Of The Week: Week 2 - Northmor

GALION - Four shutouts in five games, highlighted by a no-hitter, has Northmor head coach Buck Workman excited about what lies ahead in the 2023 season.

“Our expectations were that we would pitch well and get better as the year went on with the gloves and bats,” related the head coach of this week’s Prep Baseball Report Division IV Team of the Week. “I’m pleasantly surprised with how we’ve swung the bats so far. Our gloves have been pretty solid, too.”

But it is on the mound where the Golden Knights have really shined, currently with a 1.26 team ERA entering play this week.

“So far, our four big guys have been outstanding,” noted Workman, whose squad is ranked eighth in Ohio in Division IV in the new PBR state ratings.

Grant Bentley threw a no-hitter in a 2-0 win over Mt. Gilead while fellow junior Drew Hammond followed it up with a one-hitter two nights later against Mt. Gilead to open last week. Freshman Trevor Brubaker then tossed a three-hitter in a 9-0 blanking of Centerburg before Bryce Cooper picked up a save and a win on Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Loudonville, 9-5 and 12-0.

“We just need to keep pitching like we are and continue to have quality at bats 1-9,” explained Workman, whose Golden Knights took a 6-0 season record into action this week, which includes a pair of games with East Knox. “We’re looking for another game or two.”

Hammond and Bentley along with junior Garrett Harvey and sophomore Cole Cuffman have been “hot at the plate,” according to the Northmor mentor.

“Our everyday guys have all contributed in some facet,” Workman said. “We’ve also gotten some nice leadership out of our seniors, Max Lower, Cooper Thomas, Skyler Webb and Bohdi Workman. They’ve really helped keep the team up.”
