2022 Spring Team Preview: Montpelier Locomotives

Team Name: Montpelier Locomotives
Head Coach: Toby Hutchison
Division: IV
2021 Record: 20-7
Returning Starters/Pitchers: 3/1

2022 Team Strengths:

  • Positional Flexibility: Almost every one of our athletes can play multiple positions. With this season specifically, we are going to have to find out quick who can play where. Guys are going to be asked to play a position that maybe they aren't comfortable with and so it's nice to know that we can plug and play them.
  • Athleticism: Knowing the kids that we have coming back, we are going to be very blessed with athleticism. Correlating that natural talent and harnessing it will be the next step however. Our boys will be in great shape, we just need them to trust our philosophy.

Coach Outlook: "Last season, 2020-21, was a record breaking season by all standards. Our team finished the season 20-7 as league champions for the 3rd season in a row and district runners up. We had two athletes selected as all state nominees (Collin Crisenbery 1st Team, Tylor Yahraus Honorable Mention) and the conference player of the year (Blake Altaffer). We graduate 7 seniors from last season and are looking to continue to build our program without those leaders. This season, we are returning three starters. David Bowman is our lone senior and we plan to have him be our ultimate utility guy. He can catch, pitch, and play the corner infield positions very well. Easton Richmond, a junior, also returns and is a very versatile athlete. He will be splitting time behind the plate with David and can also play any of our infield positions as well as fill innings on the mound for us. Jaxon Richmond is our last returning starter, a sophomore. Jaxon was our number three/four in the rotation last year, but we are expecting this year to be a breakout from him. He will pitch and play the left side of the infield. We also have a good number of athletes that have been waiting for their opportunity to make the jump to varsity baseball. Trent Thorp, Jamison Grime, and Garrett Girrell are juniors that we are looking to fill the holes from our seven seniors. Landon Fackler, is a sophomore middle infielder that has been working hard in the offseason and looking to surprise a lot of people. One last interesting note is a freshman Kamron Smith who is a great athlete for us in basketball and football and we are hoping that this can correlate to success on the ball field. As we say every year, the BBC conference is as competitive as ever. With the addition of Holgate to our conference play, coaches are going to focus a bit more on who you throw against what team, since we now only play each team once as a conference game. We have had the bullseye on our back for several years and it's now up to the new generation of Locos to carry the tradition of success. "
