PBR Spotlight Game: No. 2 Moeller is too much for Lakota West

By Matt Wallisa

Moeller's potent offense was too much for Lakota West on Thursday as they cruised to a 11-2 victory.

While Lakota West may have struck first, Moeller used two big innings to plate all 11 of their runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, junior Spencer Iacovone, who is having a break out season, delivered a solo home run. After Iacovone, sophomore Zach Shannon (OSU recruit) singled up the middle. Shannon moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice. Later in the inning, Shannon scored and senior Nick Edwards (Ashland recruit) reached base after an errant throw by Lakota West's third baseman sailed into right field. Junior Brain Butz delivered an RBI double to make the score 3-2 Moeller.

In the 5th inning, Moeller stretched their lead and never looked back.

Senior Ryan LeFevers lead off the inning with a single. Senior infielder Ty Amann (OU recruit) followed with an RBI triple. Following Amann, Iacovone hit a single that plated another run and stretched the lead Moeller lead to 5-2.

As the wheels began to come off, Iacovone moved into scoring position on wild pitch. Not relenting, senior Jordan Simpson (Furman recruit) hit a RBI double.

The hits would continue for Moeller as Brad Macciocchi (WSU recruit) singled to make it first and third for the Crusaders.

Lakota West called on senior Morgan Smith in relief, but Moeller continued to swing the bats.

Edwards added a single to knock in two runs and make the lead even bigger at 8-2.

Butz followed with his second double of the day, which knocked in another run, and stretched the Moeller lead to 9-2. .

Continuing the theme, sophomore Riley Mahan singled to put runners at first and third. Smith followed with a wild pitch that made the score 10-2. Iacovone followed with a sacrifice fly to put Moeller ahead 11-2.

Moeller senior right-handed pitcher Brian Burkhart kept the Lakota West offense in check. He went seven innings giving up two runs. He allowed an RBI single to Troy Dombart in the first inning. In the third inning, he gave up consecutive hits to seniors Jake Wagner and Farmer in the third inning with Wagner eventually scoring on a passed ball.

Burkhart's fastball sat in the low 80's and he showed command of an effective 75 mph curveball.

Lakota West senior Zak Farmer (Walsh recruit) took the loss going four and a third innings while allowing 6 runs.

Farmer's fastball sat in the low 80's and topped out at 84 mph while his curveball sat at 70-71 mph.
