2019 MLB Draft: Day 2 Notes

The New York Mets dominated the talk of the 2019 MLB Draft’s second day, taking RHP Matt Allan (Seminole HS, FL) in the third round. Allan, a Florida recruit, could have easily gone in the first round and after not going on Day 1, there was thought he would get to campus. That isn’t likely to happen now and the Mets are primed to haul in three first-round talents in Allan, 3B Brett Baty (Lake Travis HS, TX) and RHP Josh Wolf (St. Thomas HS, TX). New York then went on a run of college seniors starting in the fourth round with OF Jake Mangum (Mississippi State). David Seifert talked more about the Mets’ college picks in his notebook.

After Monday, we mentioned that South Carolina was holding its breath with 3B Tyler Callihan (Providence School, FL) still on the board, but he didn’t last long, going to the Reds with the seventh pick of the day. Other high school prospects that could have gone on the first day, but were taken in the third round, included OF Hudson Head (Churchill HS, TX) and RHP Jack Kochanowicz (Harriton HS, PA).

It’s common for some high school prospects to get popped in the third round as deals are made between Days 1 and 2, but as the day progresses, we see more college seniors go and any high school pick will raise an eyebrow. C Ethan Hearn (Mobile Christian School, AL) had an inconsistent spring, but was still considered one of the better prep catchers in the class. The Cubs getting him in the sixth round could be a steal. He is a strong defender with left-handed power. Going in the fourth round was OF Glenallen Hill Jr. (Santa Cruz HS, CA). The Arizona State recruit has top-of-the-scale speed, though he needs to show more consistency at the plate. Another interesting sixth-round pick was RHP Michael Limoncelli (Horseheads HS, NY). He was taken by the Mariners and recently had Tommy John surgery. When healthy, he can run his fastball into the low 90s and spin a breaking ball.

Texas A&M lost three big pitching recruits on Monday and took another hit Tuesday with OF Dasan Brown (Abbey Park HS, ON) going to the Blue Jays in the third round. Louisiana State also took another hit with Cleveland taking SS Christian Cairo (Calvary Christian HS, FL) in the fourth round. Arizona took a huge hit Tuesday, losing RHP Andrew Dalquist (Redondo Union HS, CA) in the third round, RHP Jose Dicochea (Sahuarita HS, AZ) in the eighth and C/1B Will Bartlett (IMG Academy, FL) in the ninth.
