Maryland Preseason All-State Session II: Middle Infield Analysis

Session II of the Maryland Preseason All-State featured 75 players from across the Old Line State, Delaware, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Players were put through a pro-style workout and threw bullpens in front of our PBR Maryland staff with TrackMan and Blast on hand to capture additional data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 15 middle infielders at the event. 

 

MIDDLE INFIELDERS

(Listed Alphabetically)

Jack Andre SS / 2B / Sherwood , MD / 2023

Body: 5’10’’, 140 pounds. Lean, athletic profile with a wiry build. 
Hit: RHH. Narrow, even stance with minimal rhythm in the hands from a low start at the shoulder. Utilized a leg lift stride while holding the posture in order to initiate the bat head through a flat path into the hitting zone. Turned the body across the baseball at times leading to a mainly pull-side approach during his BP round; recorded a 73% fly ball rate pointing towards loft in the swing while notching a 281 foot peak batted ball distance. Room to add strength, which will only further his game. Developing bat to ball skills at the plate (55% on plane via Blast Motion). 
Power: 79 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Singles, table setter approach. 
Arm: RH. INF - 77 mph. Short and quick V-slot from the ear, accurate. 
Defense: Approached from a slightly moderate posture at the fielding window, used a soft glove hand to corral the baseball, quickly getting rid with a silky smooth release. Projects to play a strong second base at the moment with increased feel for pace of play in the middle. Solid actions and showed some range to the glove hand side. 
Run: 7.32 60-yard time.


Branden Brown RHP / SS / Combine Academy (NC), MD / 2022

Body: 6’3’’, 165 pounds. Lengthy projectable and athletic frame. 
Hit: RHH. Slightly open, balanced stance with the hands starting loosely on the shoulder; utilized a toe tap stride to initiate his swing through a flat path from a gather load. Got to a wide launch position allowing for burst into the hitting zone; recorded a 33% hard hit rate during BP with quality hip shoulder separation on the way through. Impressive advanced metrics, notching a 24 mph average hand speed and an average of 19 G’s of rotational acceleration via Blast Motion.
Power: 96 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power and can run it out of the yard to pull on occasion.
Arm: RH. INF - 85 mph. Strong, whippy high ¾ slot with good extension. 
Defense: Quick first step with a low center of gravity in the movements, showed range in either direction beating the ball to the spot while showing increased route awareness. Prototypical shortstop build with a feel for pace; soft glove hand worked inside and outside of the left foot featuring give and take. Made the play on the run look effortless; advanced defender qualities. 
Run: 7.32 60-yard time.


Marvin Cherry II SS / 2B / Henry E. Lackey, MD / 2021

Body: 5’3’’, 130 pounds. Developing, young, compact frame with room to add size and strength as he matures. 
Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly open stance with the hands starting with some rhythm by the head. Utilized a short lift and replace stride with a quick triggered launch through a short, flat path into the hitting zone. Stayed mostly upright in the posture with a feel for the hands at the dish; worked the middle of the field mostly while hitting into a stiff front side. Table setter approach with solid bat to ball skills (68% on plane efficiency via Blast Motion). 
Power: 81 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Singles power at the moment (234 foot peak batted ball). 
Arm: RH. INF - 72mph. Short and quick release across the diamond. 2B projection.
Defense: Quick first step and light movements on the feet; arrived on time with an up tempo approach at the fielding window, showed comfortability moving laterally in either direction setting up range to his glove hand side. Low posture and down chest angles assisted momentum on throws. 
Run: 7.08 60-yard time.


Bryce Curry SS / 2B / Damascus, MD / 2022

Body: 6’2’’, 205 pounds. Strong, projectable frame with feel present.
Hit: RHH. Backloaded, slightly open stance with the bat head waving above the shoulder to start; utilized a triggered position at the shoulder coupled with a methodical leg hang stride to initiate his swing through a slightly vertical path into the hitting zone. Good leverage out in front creating hard contact through the middle of the field; recorded a 54% line drive rate and 46% hard hit rate (batted balls over 90 mph). Really handled the pitch over the plate with juice to the middle of the field / pull side. Up to a near 330 foot batted ball distance. 
Power: 95 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with the occasional ability to run a pitch over the plate out of the yard. 
Arm: RH. INF - 83mph. Loose v-slot from a high ¾ release. Accuracy across the diamond. 
Defense: Slightly hitchy, high energy approach with attacking play from the hot corner, stayed in a low posture throughout while getting into advantageous positions with the feet on routes. Made the play on the run with ability to throw from different arm angles. 
Run: 7.52 60-yard time.


Riley Finkelston SS / 2B / River Hill, MD / 2023

Body: 5’8’’, 155 pounds. Compact, athletic frame with room to add strength. 
Hit: RHH. Narrow, slightly open setup as the hands started low at near hip level. Utilized a slight move upwards timed with a deliberate leg hang stride with hip coil around the backside to unleash the barrel through a short, flat path into the hitting zone. Tight turns that sometimes worked across the baseball yielding a pull-side approach. Hit into a stiff front side at impact; recorded a 33% line drive rate via Trackman Baseball. Developing bat to ball skills at the plate (59% on-plane efficiency per Blast Motion) with a table setter approach. 
Power: 83 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Singles power at the moment with occasional doubles juice (262 foot peak batted ball). 
Arm: RH. INF - 73 mph. Short, fluid ¾ “v-slot” slot with accuracy. 
Defense: Solid lateral movements with a quick first step and ability to work right to left on the approach, got the chest downhill and fielded softly out in front funneling inward to the body. Confidence to his glove side and beat the ball to the spot on the backhand. Made the play on the run with rhythm. 
Run: 7.25 60-yard time.


Lion Gardiner RHP / 2B / Walt Whitman, MD / 2023

Body: 5’9’’, 140 pounds. Lean, projectable frame.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly upright setup to start with present rhythm in the hands at the shoulder; utilized a leg lift stride to initiate a flat path into the hitting zone. Created some length at times with ability to get leveraged at the front of the plate; recorded a mainly pull-side approach during his batting practice round accruing a 57% line drive rate via Trackman Baseball. 
Power: 84 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Developing doubles power, mostly singles at the moment. 
Arm: RH. INF - 82 mph. Strong arm from a high-intent, high ¾ slot with good extension. 
Defense: Up tempo approach during defensive evals with adequate posture and a soft glove hand at the fielding window, funneled smoothly into the chest line with occasional range to his left; choppy footsteps early in the route, but overall control present. 
Run: 7.71 60-yard time.


E.J. Lowry SS / RHP / St. John's Catholic Prep, MD / 2023

Body: 5’11’’, 176 pounds. Strong, athletic frame with recent strength added. 
Hit: RHH. Balanced, narrow setup with a slight bend in the knees as the barrel started on the shoulder; utilized a leg lift stride to initiate tight turns through a flat path into the hitting zone; good posture overall in the swing with slight lift after contact; recorded a 71% fly ball rate to the middle/LCF side of the field. Hit into a stiff front side generating a peak batted ball distance of 292 feet via Trackman Baseball. More intent to be had in the near future, the swing was very repeatable at the plate.
Power: 86 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with feel for the bat head. 
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Violent, high intent, high ¾ slot. 
Defense: Down chest angles early in the routes with a soft glove hand at the fielding window; gained momentum while fielding creating downhill actions towards the target, adequate pace and some range to the glove hand side on occasion. 
Run: 8.03 60-yard time.


Ryan McLaughlin SS / RHP / Stephen Decatur, MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 165 pounds. Lean, athletic frame.
Hit: RHH. Wide, even stance with a slight bend in the knees; athletic setup with rhythm in the hands at near head level. Utilized a quick toe tap stride to unleash the barrel through a flat path into the hitting zone. Displayed a gap to gap approach using the middle of the field mostly during his batting practice round; accrued a 57% line drive rate with solid bat to ball skills (85% on-plane) pointing towards the ability to hit for average. Quick twitchy hands could handle the inner and outer halves with consistency, using one smooth burst to initiate. 
Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment.
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Quick, whippy ¾ slot (v-slot at times). Accurate on the target.
Defense: Really good pace and posture during defensive evaluations, worked on banana routes on rangy plays getting downhill through angles towards the target; had no issues on the transfers, exchanging from a belly button funnel before releasing. Shortstop qualities in place. 
Run: 7.36 60-yard time.


Ryan Peacock 2B / RHP / Winters Mill, MD / 2022

Body: 5’10’’, 158 pounds. Lean, high-waisted frame with athleticism throughout. 
Hit: RHH. Balanced, even stance with a slightly upright posture; the barrel worked flat above the shoulder with moderate rhythm pre-swing. Utilized a leg lift stride in order to initiate the bat head through a flat path into the hitting zone. Short, direct swing with feel for the middle of the field during batting practice. Hit into a stiff front side with some controlled weight shift present in the swing. Consistent hand speed (23 mph average per Blast Motion). 
Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power with good connection at the plate. 
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Lengthy takeaway, releasing through an accurate, ¾ slot with ASR on the ball flight. 
Defense: Hop in the prep step, with good posture on the approach, stayed low with down chest angles over the toes, fielded inward with the funnel using a soft glove hand out in front of his body, ranged well to his left with a feel for pace during defensive evals. 
Run: 6.98 60-yard time.


Ryan Perry SS / RHP / Century , MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 170 pounds. Strong, athletic frame with good proportions.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly open stance from a somewhat upright position. Utilized a leg lift stride while holding his posture on the backside in order to initiate the hands through a consistent, flat path into the hitting zone. Feel for the barrel present with confidence at the plate; repeatedly hit the ball on a line (62% line drive rate) while notching an impressive 67% on-plane efficiency pointing towards ready bat to ball skills. 
Power: 90 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with slight finesse to his game; more to come.
Arm: RH. INF - 85 mph. Quick, athletic, high ¾ slot with accuracy across the diamond.
Defense: Ready “hop” in the prep step, always looking to come get the baseball with the weight on the balls of his feet; showcased easy movements on the left side of the infield assisting the pace of play and momentum on throws across the diamond. A soft glove hand worked effortlessly and funneled into the chest line. 
Run: 7.24 60-yard time.


Austin Rhue 2B / SS / Cape Henlopen , DE / 2022

Body: 5’10’’, 150 pounds. Lean, athletic frame with feel present throughout. 
Hit: RHH. Balanced, slightly bent stance at shoulder-width with the hands showing loose rhythm to start. Utilized a leg lift stride getting to a wide position on the land, athletic base with a strong launch through a flat path with jump through the middle of the field. Good barrel awareness overall yielding a 46% line drive rate during batting practice, consistent twitch at the plate (23 mph average hand speed via Blast Motion). Short, repeatable swings that should transfer over to game action.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with a sneaky power ceiling down the road. 
Arm: RH. INF - 82 mph. Short and quick “V-slot” from the ear with accuracy across the diamond.
Defense: Lots of pre-pitch rhythm going on, bounces to a low position before attacking with choppy, up tempo feet. Range to the glove side present while holding low posture on the way through; direct angles and feel for funnels into the chest line, played with solid pace during his defensive round.
Run: 7.04 60-yard time.


Jonathan Tyndall SS / 2B / Lake Forest , DE / 2024

Body: 5’8’’, 145 pounds. Proportional, lean frame with room to add strength. 
Hit: RHH. Upright, slightly open stance with the hands starting next to the head. Utilized a lift and replace stride to initiate his swing through a flat path with burst into the zone. Recorded a 21% line drive rate via Trackman Baseball with developing bat to ball skills (52% on-plane according to Blast Motion). Mostly LCF approach during his BP round with ability to stay on pitches over the plate while hitting into a stiff front side. 
Power: 85 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Mostly singles power and table setter approach at the moment. 
Arm: RH. INF - 72 mph. Short, high ¾ slot across the diamond.
Defense: Arrived on time with up tempo feet, fielded out in front and funneled quickly into the chest and into the throwing hand. Worked in and out on the release with a feel for pace across the diamond; arm strength will relegate him to a second base position moving forward; low posture and early reads off the bat will play well. 
Run: 7.49 60-yard time.


Scott Vaszil 2B / OF / Atholton High School, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 170 pounds. Lean, athletic frame with projectability throughout. 
Hit: RHH. Slightly open, bent stance with the hands showing back and forth rhythm at the shoulder; utilized a leg lift stride to initiate the barrel through a slightly vertical path that could manipulate bat angles. Stayed on plane well (80% via Blast Motion) while keeping the ball hard in the air (60% fly ball rate / 33.3% line drive rate). Mostly middle-pull side approach with balance and athleticism in the lower half; short and efficient stroke that should play extremely well in game action with quick hands at the dish (23+ mph average hand speed). 
Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with XBH abilities. 
Arm: RH. INF - 75 mph. Moderate takeaway through a high ¾ release. Accuracy and repeatability present. 
Defense: Approached with bent, choppy steps on the way through; presented a soft glove hand off the middle of his body with an early hand break into the takeaway. Solid posture and gets rid of it in a hurry with a feel for pace in the middle. Projects as a 2B with some range to his left. 
Run: 7.02 60-yard time.


Mark Villanueva 2B / OF / Good Counsel, MD / 2022

Body: 5’6’’, 150 pounds. Lean, athletic frame with twitch throughout.
Hit: RHH. Wide, even stance with a slight bend in the knees as the hands showed some rhythm. Utilized a land on the toe down to the heel in order to initiate his swing through a quick, flat path. Handsy approach with a table setter feel in the box; recorded an 82% fly ball rate on this date mostly through the middle of the field. Sneaky connection in the box evidenced by an interesting power ceiling down the road (20 G’s of rotational acceleration on average via Blast Motion). Could use line to line when pitched in different quadrants. 
Power: 82 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Singles power with occasional gap to gap juice when he gets the bat out in front. 
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Short arm stroke from a quick release, high ¾ slot with accuracy across. 
Defense: Quick, above-average feet that were always moving and looking to gain better angles, soft glove hand came and got the baseball and funneled inward to the chest, impressive range in either direction with light actions on the feet. With the size, he might end up being an impact defender at second base at the next level. 
Run: 6.86 60-yard time.


Zachary Wainio OF / 2B / Mount St. Joseph, MD / 2022

Body: 5’11’’, 170 pounds. Twitchy athletic frame with good proportions throughout. 
Hit: RHH. Balanced, even stance from a slightly upright position. Utilized a very quiet approach at the plate with not a lot going on while still being extremely smooth in the box. Repeatable lift and replace stride and launch from the shoulder through a precise, slightly vertical path into the hitting zone. Peppered the middle of the field with good burst through impact, recorded a 58% line drive rate per Trackman Baseball. Showed command over the inner half of the plate with lightning quick hands (23.1 mph hand speed) while turning in a 77% on-plane efficiency (bat to ball skills). Profiles as a true top of the order candidate with some sneaky power developing. 
Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with more intent to be had, Power is coming.
Arm: RH. OF - 84 mph. INF - 84 mph. OF - Quick, fluid high ¾ slot with no restrictions in the arm circle. INF - After a glove tap, worked from a “v-slot” into a high ¾ release with accuracy across the diamond; quick trigger. 
Defense: OF - Choppy steps on the approach and played behind the baseball, getting downhill at the right times. Comfortability with his body in space, with appropriate routes on every rep during defensive evaluations. Trusted the glove hand which funneled into the chest line from the left side of his body. INF - Good pace from the left side working right to left from a low, momentum-filled posture. Kept the feet moving allowing for easy and accurate throws and solid pace on plays in either direction. Projects with positional flexibility both in the OF and INF giving himself more chances to get on the field early. 
Run: 7.02 60-yard time.
