EDINBURG - An early-round heavy-weight matchup took place in the Rio Grande Valley on Friday night as the Sabercats of Robert Vela High School took on the Bulldogs of McAllen High School. Vela came into the second round of playoffs with a record of 24-4-2, having defeated Harligen South in two straight games in round one, and McAllen entered with a 25-8-1 record after sweeping Eagle Pass. The two teams sent their aces to the mound as they faced off in front of a crowd of nearly 5,000 at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley baseball stadium: 2019 RHP Nico Rodriguez, committed to Kansas State, toed the rubber for Vela, and McAllen sent 2020 RHP/SS Aaron Nixon, a Texas commit. The energy was high as both teams battled out the highly anticipated meeting. A three-run first inning for Vela was the difference in the game as both teams played lights out for the remainder, but tension escalated a few times along the way. In the end, Vela would walk away with a 3-0 victory.
