2019 TOURNAMENT 12 PREVIEW: MAROON ROSTER

With Tournament 12 approaching September 17 until the 21st, we take a look at each roster, with players from all across the country with short clips on who they are what they could become this upcoming week. 

PBR will be on location for all 5 days, bringing you non-stop coverage of the Tournament along with player updates, statistics, video and more.

This year players are spread out through 6 teams, no longer separated by their territories and no longer will they begin with the 1-1 count. We look forward to seeing the talent all week but for now, get to meet your Maroon roster representatives for T12.

Levi Abbott RHP / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 2 / POS: 1 Report: The 2020 right-hander out of Alberta display’s his fastball in the upper 80s, mixed with an overhand curveball with depth, rotation and  late bite that will generate swings and misses. Expect Abbott to be one of the better uncommitted arms and should be getting lots of looks during his outing.

Darius Armorer OF / RHP / Sinclair, ON / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 25 / POS: 3 Report: Armorer is one of the more athletic and toolsy position players in the 2020 class. Its an above average arm from the outfield that can easily play in right. He moves well as our best 60 time on him is 6.90. Hits from the right-side and will surprise some with the power we’ve seen him display. Lots to like and work with here, is only going to get stronger and is a guy who you do not want to sleep on as there is big upside with Armorer.

Tyler Boudreau RHP / OF / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2021 Report: The Nova Scotia native and Vauxhall Academy product is smooth and easy on the mound with clean arm swing in the back, and can throw three pitches for strikes. It is a controlled and repeatable delivery and gets spin on the curveball and fade on the changeup. 2021 grad will be an interesting watch this week.

Jean Luc Bussieres C / OF / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 12 / POS: 2 Report: Strong right-handed hitting catcher from Alberta with the Okotoks Dawgs. Feet and arm work defensively while there is some offensive juice to unlock. The glove and lower half play behind the plate and there is carry to the bag. Will be interesting to see. There is opportunity for catchers in this country to step forward and make their names known.

David Calabrese OF / St. Elizabeth CHS, ON / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 3 / POS: 2 OverallRank: 234 / POS: 38 Report: One of the top uncommitted players in attendance. The left-handed hitter will make consistent hard contact and use the whole field  with a short stroke and barrel that stays in the zone. Exciting young 2021 who should be a follow for all coaches, expect Calabrese to be a standout during the week.

Jason Chiu SS / 2B / Albert Campbell collegiate, ON / 2019 Rankings  StateRank: 69 / POS: 9 Report: Undersized middle infielder who can pick it with the best of them. Chiu runs well and has more than enough arm from the hole, the big question is will he hit enough as there is swing and miss at times. The actions, arm and speed are there, if Chiu can do the small things offensively, he’ll be an impact player on a winning team.

Ben Columbus C / 3B / Sentinel Secondary, BC / 2020 Report: LHH catcher/third baseman out of North Shore Twins in BC. Bat is smooth and controlled with feel for the barrel, simple and easy swing with minimal movement, should be a left-handed bat that people get to know quickly.

Yohan Dessureault 3B / RHP / Academie Baseball Canada, QC / 2020 Report: has a strong athletic build that stands out at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. Dessureault has a wide stance and simple load keep him quiet and compact. Smooth, compact swing from the left side with gap-to-gap power. The 2020 grad plays with rhythm at short with soft hands that complement a solid first step. Also throws 85 with some sink on the mound.

J.J. Dutton SS / OF / Forest Hill, ON / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 40 / POS: 6 Report: Dutton, a two-way player has made huge strides throughout the 2019 summer, and he still has lots of room to develop. He moves well as he’s a 6.82 60 runner, and his arm works up to 90 mph. His bat is a little behind, but with more reps and tinkering, he could be useful on that side of the ball. Although underdeveloped, he might be best off on the mound where his arm speed and frame both fit the profile. His body control still needs to improve, and with filling out he’ll improve in that area which will impact him in all facets of his game. Dutton is a very interesting 2021 grad that schools should keep tabs on going forward.

Yosuke Fujie SS / C / Yale, BC / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 12 / POS: 1 Report: Yosuke is an athletic, switch hitting true shortstop, with quick hands and a strong arm that will play at the next level. He shows good range and a quick release paired with his instincts make for a plus defender. A natural RHH, he has a compact, simple swing from both sides, small-ball hitter with good speed.

Nick Gravel 2B / SS / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2020 Report: Gravel was a big piece of Nova Scotia’s gold medal at the Canada Cup, where the left-handed hitting middle infielder makes plays to both sides up the middle and shows confidence in his ability, at the plate its line drive oriented with controlled barrel and lots of contact. Lots of upside with Gravel, especially once he adds strength.

Justin Humenay RHP / OF / Taft School, QC / 2020 Report: Humenay is 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder and pitcher. Humenay can throw 90 mph from the outfield with carry and accuracy. On offense the 2020 grad has a simple and clean swing. On the mound, from a ¾ arm slot the fastball sat 86-88 mph with arm side action. The slider is 79-81 mph and the changeup sits 72-73 mph.

Zach Laurie OF / RHP / Crestwood, ON / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 15 / POS: 2 Report: The St. Johns commit has always been offense first with loose, quick bat from the left side, and was a standout at the Future Games last year in Indianapolis. We’ve seen Laurie work more to the opposite field at the plate lately and will see if he can barrel up and let some of his power work to his pull side.

Simon Lusignan RHP / Foothills Composite, AB / 2021 Rankings  OverallRank: 134 / POS: 43 Report: Lusignan is a 2021 grad committed to Stetson who now plays out on the west coast with Okotoks Dawgs. It’s a long, lean, and projectable 6-foot-5 frame with room to add size and muscle. He’s been up to 90 mph with the fastball and flashed some secondary stuff that makes him very interesting arm. We like the upside with Lusignan and if he can get more consistent, your gonna see him take off quickly and cement himself as one of the top arms in the country.

Maddux Mateychuk RHP / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2020 Report: Chance to be the hardest thrower in the tournament, the Manitoba native is a product of Vauxhall Academy in Alberta. Stocky, strong frame and works from ¾ slot with a fastball that has touched 93 mph. Secondary stuff needs polish but not much velocity will match Mateychuk as he could be a nice late grab for teams looking for a 2020 arm.

Bennett Moore RHP / 1B / Goderich District Collegiate Institute, ON / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 39 / POS: 12 Report: Big frame at 6-foot-6, Moore does a good job of working downhill and using an overhand curveball to go along with his fastball that works in the mid 80’s and can see that number climbing. Moore has all kinds of upside as the arm and body both work on the mound and the curveball has spin and depth with downward action, definite guy to be aware of.

Josh Niles 3B / 1B / St. Joseph Catholic, ON / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 11 / POS: 3 Report: Niles, a wiry infielder with ability to drive the ball from the right side of the plate is a name to pay attention to. Have seen him make plays in the infield and the bat plays with extra base potential while the frame will get stronger to go along with the bat speed he has, could see some power jumps down the line. Plays with an edge and isn’t scared on the field.

Gavin Pringle RHP / NA, BC / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 5 / POS: 3 Report: Pringle, a Canada Junior National Team member, has a strong built frame of 6 foot 2 220 pounds. Fastball sits 87-89 from a ¾ arm-slot. Secondary pitches include a curveball of 72-74 mph with late break and a slider with good depth. The currently uncommitted 2020 grad is a steal for a college program.

Lukas Touma RHP / 1B / William Lyon Mackenzie CI, ON / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 16 / POS: 4 Report: Loose, easy arm from clean ¾ slot that works in the mid 80’s with his fastball and throws strikes with three pitches, all coming out the same slot with the breaking ball and changeup both being pitches he can get outs with. The stuff plays.

Dante Wright SS / 3B / N/A, ON / 2020 Report: Big left-handed hitting corner infielder with power in his bat and the ability to jump baseballs while playing a solid third base. It’s an open, upright stance with bat speed and power to go to all fields. Wright is an offensive bat that can make some noise at the Rogers Centre next week.

Andrew Yusypchuk RHP / SS / St. Francis Xavier, AB / 2020 Report: 2020 Right-hander who works in the low to mid 80’s with his fastball and has the ability to throw three pitches, while being pretty mechanically sound on the mound.
