2021 Third Basemen on the Rise

Colton Provey
Tennessee Scouting Director

Following fall commitments from 2019 Future Gamers Tyler Harrington (Briarcrest) and Bryson Trammell (Bearden), another Team Tennessee member took over as top uncommitted hot corner prospect.  Ty Bailey (Lebanon) showcased a well-rounded game with offensive prowess and defensive versatility to earn the title; however, there is a tight knit group right on his heels.  Abbott Lawrence (Knights Academy), who shined at Preseason All-State Showcase, soared into the rankings as the only hot corner newcomer in the top 100 prospects.  Below we take a deeper look at the top five uncommitted third basemen plus positional overview for the 2021 class.

2021 On the Rise:

Third Basemen

Ty Bailey | 3B/UTL | Lebanon | Rank: 39
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound former Future Gamer has a well-rounded game with some high upside tools.  The quick-twitch athlete is a versatile defender, playing both corner infield and outfield positions while packing some punch at the plate with easy gap-to-gap power.  With strong athletic frame, Bailey can generate some explosive bat speed from the right side as barrel whips through the zone.  Defensively, moves well showing good range and plenty of arm strength.  Additionally, Bailey made a return to the mound this offseason and reports of him in the mid-80s should make him an enticing two-way prospect to follow this summer.

Logen Sutton | 3B | Powell | Rank: 45
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Sutton shows super intriguing tools at the hot corner with ability to find the barrel.  Sturdy, athletic frame with well-proportioned strength, uber projectable. Hits w/ an open, slightly crouched stance w/ short hand rhythm into leg kick and proper load.  Generates above average bat speed through the zone.  Simple, repeatable swing.  All fields approach with lot of line drives, power to all fields as body matures. Defensively, shows the tools to stay at 3B, learning to harness his arm strength.

Sawyer Watts | 3B/SS | Pope John Paul II | Rank: 55
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Watts is a tall, fast twitch dual-sport athlete.  The JP2 quarterback is a stellar glove at 3B and has tools to fill in at SS.  Quick feet, dependable hands, and good carry on throws across the diamond.  Offensively, setup is very relaxed and moves to the ball quietly with good rhythm and timing. Quick bat speed while keeping barrel in the zone for long time and peppering line drives to all fields.  Projects gap-to-gap hitter, who can defend the left side of the infield.

Abbott Lawrence | 3B/1B | Knights Academy | Rank: 60
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound third baseman made his presence known at All-State Showcase.  Lawrence put on a tower power display at the dish with consistent loud contact and ball just jumping off the barrel.  Balanced swing with short, simple load followed by electric bat speed.  Can harness the power to all fields with good spray chart.  At the hot corner, moved well for big league frame and fielded ball out front with light hands and working well through the ball.  Ample arm strength to stay at 3B, an offensive slugger who cracked into our latest rankings.

Alex Runk | 3B | Summit | Rank: 107
The 6-foot, 205-pound sturdy, frame hot corner prospects can bop the baseball. Much different look at the dish compared to last summer.  Open, tall stance with tall and fall type style and generates explosive bat speed and good extension on finish. More consistent timing and rhythm with still some room to improve, but some raw power.  Sprays hard line drives to all fields with gap to gap power.  At the hot corner, moves athletically with quick exchange and solid arm.  As he continues to develop, projects to be a steady pure 3B, who can really swing the stick.
