2023 Team Preview: Frisco Lone Star Rangers

Brandon Gowins
Texas Scouting Director

The 2023 high school baseball season is underway with practice having started and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in the Austin at the State Tournament, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and eventually releasing our preseason Top 30 teams in the state.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week and updating the Top 30 teams in the state.

*Please note that all information is based on team preview questionnaires that were sent out and returned by the participating high school coaches.

Team Outlook:

The 2022 Frisco Lone Star team had one of their best seasons to date.  They went 23-11 and finished as a Regional Semifinalist.  This years team looks a little different, especially on the mound, but they have some key returners and some guys looking to make some noise in their senior year.  While the team looks different, the expectations stay the same.

The biggest question mark for the Rangers this year is pitching. Last years squad was anchored by
RHP Dom Reid (OSU), RHP Tyler Bogusz (Blinn JC) and Teague Rewhald (Cisco). Those 3 are gone
now, but there is still talent on the mound. Sr. OF/LHP Bennett Fryman has some of the best arm talent
in North Texas from the Left Side. If he is consistently in the strike zone, he can beat anyone in their
district. Chase Womack, a Baylor Signee as a MIF, also can throw meaningful innings on the mound
with a good arm and high baseball IQ. Sr. Sam Blankenship also will look to help out on the mound
this year.

Offensively, while Lone Star lost some guys, they still have plenty of firepower in the lineup. Womack
and Fryman are the catalyst here. Womack shows the ability to drive the baseball to all parts of the
field from both sides of the plate and should offer a some power this year . Fryman, much like on the
mound, has some of the loudest tools around. If he stays patient in the zone, Fryman could have a
monster year. Sr. Utility player Gabe Barrientes and Sr. McCann Libby (Navarro) both had good
seasons last year and are poised for even bigger ones in '23. They both have projectable frames and
will be interested to see if they tap into their power potential this year. Jr. C Drew Buford is also poised
for a big year. He handled the staff well last year, and this year looks to be a force on both sides of
the ball. Soph. James Dagenhart is one to watch out this year. Good defender on the dirt and grass
and shows some offensive potential at the plate

Lone Star has more questions coming into this season than last, but they have a good group of
Seniors that are ready to lead now and continue the Rangers' winning ways.
