Lobos Scout Day: Quick Hits

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

BOERNE, TX- This scout day was loaded with several uncommitted players in the 2020--2021 classes that is likely to start drawing interest from college recruiters. Here is just a small sample of guys that stood out.

2020 1B/RHP Hector Trevino III (MacArthur) is already strong at 6-3/225 and the right handed hitter showed easy power during BP as he juiced balls around the yard and homered over the LF wall. At the end of the day he hopped on the mound and was 83-85 with a clean quick arm swing and smooth delivery. CB was 72-73 and CH was 74-76.

2020 C Devin Goins (Taft) has gap power from the left side with a top exit velo of 91 mph. Runs well for a catcher with a 7.37 60 and the arm strength (79) from behind the dish is gonna play as he posted pop times ranging from 2.0-2.1. At 6-foot-1/205 this is a guy that college coaches want to see this summer.

2020 SS Michael Perales (Taft) ran a 6.87 60 and took a polished round of BP, lacing line drives through the middle with quick hands and a short stroke. Soft hands in the middle infield, he looks like a top of the order hitter who’s speed and approach should play.

2021 C/2B Ryan Ruff (Smithson Valley) has plenty of arm strength and feel to play both the IF and behind the plate. He threw bullets to 2B at 75 mph with pop times ranging from 1.91-2.01. The defense behind the plate is clean and polished as he receives at a high level and the exchange is super fast. Really good round of BP with tons of barrels and even though he is only 5-7/160, his bat plays above that.

2021 SS Leonel Parra (Johnson) has polished actions in the middle of the field with some flash to it. Handles the ball extremely well and looks like a guy that can really defend.

2020 C Chandler Cole (Smithson Valley) has a loose arm swing both from behind the plate and on the mound. The 6-foot-2 backstop posted pop times of 2.0-2.17 with a top velocity from the crouch of 75 mph. He also pitched at 80-82 and it looks like there is more velocity to come in the future.

2020 3B/OF Jager Collins (Churchill) is a physical corner bat at 6-foot-4/215 pounds. Collins posted a top exit velo of 92 mph and threw 83 across the diamond. Simple swing with strength to pull side.

2020 SS Ryan Lopez (Taft) took a solid round of BP with a balanced hack as he barrelled it up.

2020 RHP Christopher Rodriguez (Taft) showed a quick arm with his fastball that got up to 81, but he can spin the slider at 73 mph with late downer bite.

A couple of other athletic guys that ran well were 2020 Griffin Johnson (7.07) who took a solid round of BP with a loose easy finish and barreled it up in the middle of the field. 2020 OF/SS Joey Coolbaugh (7.09) is a switch hitter with smooth actions in the outfield and is hitterish from both sides of the plate although he drove the ball with more authority from the right side. 2020 RHP/OF Christopher Kollman has the lean-strong build of a track athlete and ran a 6.92 60.
