Eastern Wisconsin Open: Statistical Analysis

Staff Writer, Associate Scout

On Monday, Aug. 16, the PBR Wisconsin scouting staff traveled to Wildwood Park in Sheboygan, Wis., to host the annual Eastern Wisconsin Open event. This open showcase helped introduce us to some need-to-know players in the state that we’d not yet seen before, as well as provided us with updated looks at players who’ve earned our attention in the past.

Yesterday, our scouting staff collaborated to highlight several standouts and performances from Monday’s showcase inside our Quick Hits piece, which you can find HERE. Today, we’ll start our deep dive into the data collected from our event by taking a look at those who topped our statistical leaderboards and put up noteworthy numbers.

You’ll see more content roll out throughout the week, such as leaderboards taken from TrackMan and Blast Motion data, as our partners’ state-of-the-art technologies helped our staff identify even more players to know headed into the fall and beyond.

For now, let’s take a look at the traditional data from Monday’s event at Wildwood Park.

+ OF/RHP Ethan Ovsak (Denmark, 2023) made a strong first impression in his PBR event debut on Monday afternoon. A quick-twitch 6-foot, 163-pound athlete, Osvak ran the fastest 60-yard dash of the day, clocking a 6.88 on our lasers early on in his workout. He also tied for the second-hardest throw from the outfield and was up to 81 mph on the mound.

+ Despite standing out for his pure performance throughout the workout yesterday, INF Luis Serrano (Jefferson, 2022) paced all infielders in throwing velocity. He reached back for a relatively easy 85 mph strike on his first throw across the diamond and did so again on the second, hitting the first baseman directly in the chest on both.

+ Two 2023 backstops led the event in average pop times, finishing at first and second on our leaderboard, respectively: C/1B Trenton Feucht (Freedom, 2023) and C Jake Olszewski (Germantown, 2023). Feucht is a lanky 6-foot-2, 180-pound athlete with present strength attached to his levers that aided him in producing natural carry to his target, consistently working around the bag. Olszewski is cut from a smaller, more compact mold, yet works with a controlled quickness behind the plate and he topped at 76 mph from the chute, too.

+ Two uncommitted 2022 graduates reached 84 mph highs on their fastball, doing so in different ways: RHP Kahler Key (La Crosse Aquinas) and RHP Jack Ryan (Janesville Craig). Key brings an imposing presence to the mound, standing at a large 6-foot-5, 190-pound frame and using that shear size to generate velocity. Ryan, on the other hand, has plenty of loose and whippy arm strength attached to his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame. The latter also paced our outfield velocity leaderboard, tossing an 89 mph bullet to home on his hardest throw.

+ The last arm to toe the rubber on Monday was INF/RHP Grant Meulemans (Freedom, 2022). A lean 5-foot-11, 165-pound athlete that we’ve long known as a position player, Muelemans recorded the highest max fastball velocity of any pitcher in attendance, topping at 85 mph on his best bullet.

+ Two uncommitted left-handed hitters topped our leaderboard in max exit velocity: 1B Braeden Ryan (Waupaca) and OF Luke Erickson (Eau Claire Memorial). Ryan led the event with a 97 mph high on his best barrel, while Erickson finished a few ticks behind him at 94 mph.
