Wisconsin Unsigned Senior Showcase: Statistical Analysis

By: Diego Solares
Staff Writer, Associate Scout

On Oct. 23, the PBR Wisconsin staff hosted its final showcase of 2021: the Unsigned Senior Showcase. This showcase provided our staff with the opportunity to see a collection of the area’s under-the-radar, uncommitted players, many of whom made their PBR event debuts at this showcase.

Yesterday, our staff rolled out our notes from the day and which prospects showed well, nestled inside this Quick Hits piece.

Today, we’ll begin to roll out all our prototypical post-event content pieces, starting with this statistical analysis. Below we’ll highlight players that put up numbers from a traditional standpoint, such as leaders in the 60-yard dash, max throwing velocities, and other data gathered from the day.

We’ll also roll out more analysis as the week rolls on, like a takeaways piece from the day and deeper data dives with the statistics collected from our technological partners at TrackMan and Blast Motion.

For now, take a look at which players put out noteworthy statistical outputs.

STAT STORY

+ Another toolsy, uncommitted athlete that continues to show well in the showcase setting each time we see him is OF Calvin Keesler (Xavier, 2022). Built at a proportionally athletic 6-foot-3, 180-pounds, Keesler’s body offers noteworthy upside on it’s own and his tools are certainly an added bonus. He ran the day’s second-fastest 60 times at 6.75 on our lasers and his 94.40 mph max exit velocity in BP was amongst the day’s hardest hit balls, while also leading all hitters in average exit speed (87.18 mph). Diving deeper into the TrackMan data, Keesler’s peak batted distance (346 ft.), average hand speed (23.00 mph), and max bat speed (77.60 mph) all ranked towards the top of their respective leaderboards.

+ C Ryder Derouin (Wisconsin Lutheran) was another strong statistical performer that put up numbers in his PBR event debut. A 6-foot-3, 185-pound athlete, Derouin finished with a peak exit velocity of 93.60 mph, which was one of the day’s best, and his average exit speed of 86.47 mph finished a tick below the showcase leader. Derouin led all catchers in throwing velocity at this event with a 78 mph best and his best pop of 2.05 seconds was also the day’s best.

+ 1B Michael Zordani (Arrowhead, 2022) paced the day in peak exit velocity, barreling his best ball up at 95.38 mph on his final swing of batting practice. Zordani routinely made hard contact throughout, finishing with an average exit speed of 86.26 mph that just missed for the event lead.

+ C/RHP Hunter Buschke (Notre Dame Academy, 2022) looked the part in multiple areas across his workout on Saturday at The MOSH. A 5-foot-10, 165-pound prospect, Buschke’s average hand speed in BP (25.30 mph) was the day’s best mark and an impressive metric for his age. Defensively, Buschke showed above-average arm strength behind the plate, peaking at 77 mph from the crouch to second base. He hopped on the mound later in the day and ran his fastball up to 82 mph, leading the entire event.

+ OF Logan Des Lauries (Oconomowoc, 2022) glided his way to the day’s fastest 60-yard dash, cruising to a 6.60 on our lasers. The 6-foot, 175-pound athlete offers upside inside a lean, quick-twitch frame.

+ RHP/INF Tanner Johnson (Indian Trail, 2022) contributed in multiple different areas, running a 7.19 in the 60-yard dash at a physical 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame. He finished with a peak exit velocity of 92.80 mph and launched the day’s furthest ball, recording a max distance of 329 ft. Johnson led all infielders in throwing velocity and was also up to 80 mph on the mound with a 2,200+ RPM average on his slider.
