Q&A with Sean Marlow

Q: You attended the Future Games in Georgia. When you left the event and headed back to Colorado, what was your overall impression of the event?

Marlow: I have never been watched by so many people that had clipboards. The event was also very fun, testing the best baseball players in Colorado against all the other states.

Q: What was the recruiting trail like for you, before you attended the Future Games? Were colleges interested early on and how did you get on the college coaches radars?

Marlow: The recruiting trail for me felt long and had both busy and quiet points. Starting mid-sophomore year, I had calls here and there. I wasn’t on most colleges' radar for a while, but when I was interested, I kept sending emails to them when I had updates to videos or travel dates to share. Between my attempted contacts, my coaches/advisors looking out for me, and the PBR Future Games exposure, I got on more college coaches' radar. Post Future Games through the fall of my junior year recruiting became more active.

Q: You're committed to University of St. Thomas, how did you connect with them and what was it like talking to their staff? Did you visit, and if so how was that?

MarlowOne of my coaches/advisors told me the St. Thomas coach was interested and they wanted to talk if I was interested. By the time we talked, they had seen a lot of videos of me on my PBR profile and Youtube. Then I started talking to the assistant coach regularly. Conversations with the coaches felt easy. The calls were not just about recruiting, we got to know each other. When I took a visit I loved everything about the school. I got to see the true vibe and spirit of the college. I could picture myself there and knew I wanted to go to St Thomas for both baseball and academics.

Q: What made you choose University of St. Thomas over other schools that gave you offers?

Marlow: I love what the St. Thomas baseball program has planned for the future and is doing right now as  they move to D1. I really want to be a part of what they are building and the vision of the coaches for this transition.  I also really liked my fit for the style of baseball the coaches like to play.

Q: Now that you have finished your recruitment process, do you have any advise for young ‘24s, 25’s or even ‘26s who have just started this process?

Marlow: If I have one thing to tell younger players about the recruitment process it’s “get on it, don't procrastinate”. The only way to find where you want to go is actually looking. I recommend visiting different types of schools when traveling for baseball or on family trips. That helps figure out what kind of college may be a fit when they show interest even if you haven’t been there.

Then once you have some idea on the type of school, majors of interest, location, etc, research potential matches. Email those coaches telling them you are interested and send some profiles and videos. Your PBR profile is great for this.  Also, do not just copy and paste emails to the coaches. Actually look into each school and try your best to write heartfelt emails. Try to stand out and not be another email in their inbox.

Q: Lastly, out of all the PBR events you have attended in your career, what has PBR meant to you during your time playing baseball in Colorado?

Marlow: My favorite PBR event I went to was the Junior Future Games. It was my first exposure to all sorts of different talents in the country which was really cool. PBR has been a guide to me for what I need to do in my career. I like to see the other players at my age and see where I stand. I learned what I needed to focus on for improvement. PBR is also a good resource for building a profile over time that records metrics from the local showcases.
