U of West FL Commit. 5-foot-10, 180 pounds. This is one of the biggest reasons why I feel like the War Eagles can make a serious run in region play and potentially make some noise in the playoffs. They have a leadoff hitter who is one of the toughest players in GA to strike out. After a 3 game extended look at him, I can confidently say that his pitch recognition and plate discipline are some of the best in the class. I haven’t seen him K once in 10 AB’s, or chase a pitch outside the zone in general. He’s just as likely to send a 1st pitch outer half FB in the gap for a double as he is to work an 11 pitch walk. Urias’ consistently good swing decisions and ability to manipulate the barrel to any pitch location lead to a bat that can be counted on in clutch situations when the season is on the line. His hitting performance last night was a work of art, first delivering 2 RBI on a perfect inside-out swing to right center. To see Urias angle the hips/shoulders to right center just as he lands shows the discipline and body control he has as a hitter, allowing his lower half momentum & swing path to work cleanly to the opposite field. This can also be shown in the position his hands are in through contact, with the top hand staying “palm up” preventing rollover/topspin. Urias hips control his direction, and he’s perfectly connected on the backside. This allows him to land lightly on his front foot and prevent unnecessary head movement. Not long after, he showed off his ability to turn the barrel in tight space with an efficient back elbow tuck/front arm shrink combo that’s as clean as it gets! He also had a leadoff 3B to start the game. Not only can this bat carry SoFo in region play, but I think it can be a difference maker for UWF's lineup early in his college career.
