Scouting Report

Summer Team: Edmonton Cardinals

Background: Blumhagen is one of the top arms left in the 2018 class ranked 26th overall and 4th at his position. Listed at 6-foot, 180-pounds, lean and wiry build with plenty of room to add bulk and size to his current frame, very strong with quick twitch actions. He works quick with a good tempo on the mound filling up the zone with a fastball that topped out at 85 mph, sitting 81-83 with arm-side run and good sink during bullpen session earlier this month, also showed good arm action on changeup with late movement, able to locate his his breaking ball on both sides of the plate and bury one when needed. Although he is still very raw, the uncommitted lefty has the tools that could translate into a high end college arm.

Need to Know: Last summer Blumhagen was topping out at 77 with his fastball, hitting 85 in March is an eight mph gain in just over six months and although the delivery can be funky and awkward it is definitely not max effort type stuff. According to the coaching staff at the Prospects Academy he has been putting in work this off-season and is showing a new level of commitment and dedication to his craft, he will be an interesting arm to keep an eye on as the season gets going into full swing, if he proves he has the stuff to get outs at the next level he could be a good late pick up for a school looking to add a quality arm from the left side.
