PBR IA COMMITMENT SPOTLIGHT

PBR: Why did you choose Northwestern College?
DYKSTRA: I chose Northwestern College in Orange City because it is a great fit for me personally. Athletically, I really like Coach Wede and his staff. I like the direction of their program and I know a number of players on the team and they have really enjoyed their time there. Academically they’ve got a great science department and I’m looking to major in either exercise science or sport management. And Northwestern College is a Christian college that will allow me to grow my faith.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
DYKSTRA: The schools that I was talking with were either juco schools like DMACC and Southeastern or Division 3/NAIA schools like Central, Oklahoma Wesleyan, and Jamestown.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did your relationship develop with him?
DYKSTRA: Northwestern first reached out to me after the PBR showcase in March and then they watched me a few times during the high school season while I was pitching for Urbandale. And then this fall Coach Wede came to a couple Iowa Sticks tournaments and we had more conversations following those. I had regular conversations with both Coach Wede and Coach Kirkeby over the summer and I got on campus a couple times and got to know more of the staff as well.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not deal with everything that goes into picking a school?
DYKSTRA: Yes, I feel great about my decision to attend Northwestern College. It’s a good feeling to have the decision behind me and I’m looking forward to not only my senior season at Urbandale but also playing baseball for the Red Raiders.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?
DYKSTRA: Like I said earlier, Northwestern College really checked all my boxes and is a great fit for me. I really like Coach Wede and his staff as well, and one of the things I really wanted to do in college was that opportunity to play both ways. At Northwestern I’m going to get that opportunity to compete for both an outfield spot and innings on the mound.

PBR: Who has helped you the most to get to where you are today?
DYKSTRA: From a baseball standpoint I’ve had great coaches from the time I’ve played little league and travel ball all the way up to the high school level. Coach Heinen, Coach Barnes, Coach Delaney, Coach Troncin and all the coaches at Urbandale have been great and I’ve learned a ton from them.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Was it easy/difficult?
DYKSTRA: To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect in terms of the recruiting process. No one had really gone through this process before in my family. I was just focused on helping Urbandale be successful and do whatever I could to contribute to the team. The hardest part of the recruiting process to me was actually telling coaches I was going to plan for someone else.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for you in your freshman season?
DYKSTRA: Like I said earlier, I have a good opportunity to contribute to the success of the team as a freshman and Coach Wede has said I will have the opportunity to compete for spots on the team as a freshman.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?
DYKSTRA: My most memorable baseball moment was winning the 2019 state championship in my sophomore year. We came into the tournament as the defending champs but we all felt like underdogs the entire tournament. Being able to beat an incredibly talented Johnston team in the state championship was the icing on the cake to a very memorable season.

PBR: Who is the best player that you have competed against?
DYKSTRA: Playing in the CIML we face so many great players. Some of the guys from this year were obviously Jackson Payne, Jackson Wentworth, and Brody Brecht. But I think the best baseball player I played against is Peyton Williams from Johnston. He hit a ball off me that I’m not sure has landed yet.
