Chase Edgar RHP / SS / Austin Prep, MA / 2026ATKINSON, N.H. - Chase Edgar always hoped he could be like his father and play college baseball. It is now a reality after making a commitment to Elon. “My dad played at UConn and I grew up around the game,” the Austin Prep junior said in reference to his father, Jason. “It was always my dream to play college baseball, but I was uncertain if I could do it.” The decision to make pitching his number one priority proved to be vital. “I was an infielder and pitcher but struggled hitting at 15U,” Edgar explained. “I did both, but we ran out of pitching one tournament and I hopped on the mound and did well.” Still, his potential to make it to the next level was low, throwing in the high-70s and topping at 81 two years ago. That is, until velocity came. “I had a big velo jump the winter before this spring,” related the 154th-ranked 2026 right-handed pitcher in the nation. “In tryouts this spring I was hitting 87-88. Gaining mass and refining my mechanics a little more helped.” Elon took an interest. “They came to some of my games this summer,” Edgar noted. “My summer coach Scott Patterson and Elon (assistant) coach (Robbie) Huffstetler have a good relationship. They saw me pitch well and saw me pitch poorly. They called and offered on Aug. 1.” That was a busy day for the second-ranked junior RHP in New England. “About 20 schools reached out,” Edgar reflected. “I knew a certain couple would reach out that had seen me in the summer, but it was crazy. The Future Games was huge for me. It was great to get out and have a wide variety of schools see you. That really helped.” Five offers were received before deciding on the Coastal Athletic Association university located in North Carolina, nearly 13 hours from home. “I narrowed it down, but Elon was just the best fit overall with the way I connected with the staff and how they expressed interest in me,” the 17-year-old explained. “The campus is beautiful, the facilities are beautiful and the staff is awesome. I felt I could trust them the best.” While shortstop was his primary position until recently, Edgar related that being on the mound was always his first love. “My whole life I’ve liked pitching more,” the 498th-rated junior in the country explained. “I was always successful doing it and it was more fun than playing in the field. I always knew being a pitcher was what I liked to do more, but wasn’t sure if I’d be able to do it at the next level. When I hit a velo jump is when it became a reality.” Elon sees a lot of promise in the seventh-rated 2026 in New England. “I’m only 5-11 170 now and throwing 86-88 at the end of fall,” Edgar noted. “They like the way I spin it and the way I compete, too. Honestly, it’s just the beginning. I’m excited for where I end up when it comes to my development.” There was plenty of assistance in getting to this point according to Edgar. “My dad has been a huge influence,” Edgar said. “It was reassuring to have someone like him who knew how to navigate everything. The NEB travel program was also big along with 603 in New Hampshire where I work out. Ken Harring, the former coach at Lowell whose son played on my high school team, was another great resource.” Edgar is confident he can make an impact at Elon. “I’m gonna be a competitor and a great teammate,” Edgar explained. “I’ll give everything I can while I’m there. I just want to win.” It was a memorable day when the commitment was made. “It’s a dream come true,” Edgar said. “What a blessing. This is a dream I’ve looked forward to my whole life. My dad was just so happy for me. He was congratulating me and telling me I earned it.” The chance to play in the south added to the excitement. “Playing in the warm weather is a luxury, it’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was little,” Edgar related. “I don’t mind being in the northeast and the cold, so I think I can bring some toughness to North Carolina.” A 3.75 student at Austin Prep who is uncertain about a college major, Edgar summed up his top ambition at Elon in one word. |
