WV Top Prospect Games Review: Catcher Analysis

The summer rush of PBR events in Pennsylvania and West Virginia came to a close with the inaugural WV Top Prospect Games on August 9 and 10. Prospects from four states assembled at the YMCA Kennedy Center Field in Huntington, WV for two days of nine inning games and showcase activities. Today we begin our analysis of the prospects in attendance by taking a look at the catchers that participated.

2015 C/3B Eric Loucks (Hempfield Area HS, PA)

Eric LoucksLoucks is a solidly built 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect that went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI during game action at the plate. The right-handed hitter has very quick hands and displayed the ability to drive the baseball to all fields during batting practice from a slightly open stance. Loucks flashed pop times of 2.02-2.14 on throws of 73 mph from the crouch. He has some room to improve his catch and throw skills, but displays good carry and enough arm strength for the position.

2015 C/3B Connor Moffatt (George Washington HS)

Connor MoffattMoffatt flashed pop times of 2.13-2.23 on throws of 67 mph from the crouch with little wasted movement in his throwing mechanics. He 5-foot-9, 190-pounder is a very intelligent prospect with a strong academic record and an advanced knowledge of the game. The right-handed hitter hits from a wide, square stance with no stride. Moffatt used a strong lower half to barrel the baseball consistently to all fields during batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. The uncommitted senior went 2-for-5 with a double during game action over two days.

2015 C Joey Professori (Pine-Richland HS, PA)

Joey ProfessoriProfessori displayed the most advanced defensive skills among catchers at the event. He is a polished receiver and blocker that showcased pop times of 2.06-2.12 on throws of 67 mph from the crouch. Offensively, Professori hits from a slightly open stance and uses a direct swing path to create a bat exit velocity of 76 mph. The right-handed hitter barreled the baseball consistently during batting practice and went 3-for-6 at the plate in game action over two days.

2015 C/3B Hunter Alexander (Blackhawk HS, PA)

Alexander hits from a square stance with a short swing path creating a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. The 5-foot-6, 160-pound right-handed hitter went 2-for-6 with two RBI in game action over two days. Alexander showcased pop times of 2.06-2.12 on throws of 66 mph from the crouch. The uncommitted senior displayed quick feet, a clean ball transfer and a very accurate arm.

2015 C/3B Dillon Curtin (The Linsly School)

Curtin is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound uncommitted senior that showcased pop times of 2.03-2.12 on throws of 70 mph from the crouch. Curtin displayed a quick transfer and an accurate arm with solid carries to his throws. The right-handed hitter showed a 78 mph bat exit velocity and barreled the baseball routinely in batting practice from a square stance.

2016 C Dylan Foster (Woodrow Wilson HS)

Foster is a 5-foot-8, 175-pound backstop with a solid frame that showcase pop times of 2.16-2.23 on throws of 72 mph from the crouch. The junior displayed quick feet and a clean transfer during his defensive evaluation. The right-handed hitter started from a slightly open stance and used a leg lift stride during a solid round of batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 77 mph. Foster showed the ability to use all fields and went 1-for-5 with two RBI in game action.

2016 C/3B Chad Harper (Brooke HS)

Harper is a 6-foot, 190-pound junior that showcased pop times of 2.06-2.18 on throws of 69 mph from the crouch. Harper displayed and accurate arm and a quick release and his physical frame projects to improvements in arm strength moving forward. The right-handed utilizes a high hands load from a square stance and showed the ability to routinely square the baseball in batting practice with a bat exit velocity of 80 mph. Harper went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk during game action and showed a high energy approach to the game.

2016 C/RHP John Judy (Hampshire HS)

Judy went 1-for-5 with an RBI at the plate during game action over two days. The right-handed hitter barreled the baseball frequently in batting practice with a short, line drive swing from a square stance. The 6-foot, 150-pound junior showcased pop times of 2.12-2.20 on throws of 70 mph from the crouch with quick feet and a quick ball transfer. Judy also worked two innings on the mound sitting 75-77 from a high 3/4 arm slot. The righty also showed a 64 mph curveball with 11/5 rotation and a 67 mph changeup.
