3.6.18
6-foot-1, 210 pounds, thick, physical frame with strength in the upper and lower body. Slightly sloped shoulders, wide back, and average proportions. A right-handed pitcher, Phillips’ hands start high and he works from the third base side of the rubber, throwing from a ¾ slot. The delivery is quick with tempo and inline. He’s got a short, clean arm swing before exploding to the plate, the ball jumps out of his hand. He gets good extension of his stride with a strong finish. With rhythm and a simple delivery, Phillips showed athleticism with easy repetition of his mechanics throughout the workout, as well as pitchability, filling up the zone with all of his offerings. His fastball, which consistently sat between 82-84 MPH gets on top of hitters quickly. It’s a heavy fastball with sink that will be tough to make hard contact against when working in the lower third of zone. His slider, which comes in between 69-71 MPH has potential as a swing-and-miss secondary. At times, he can drop his arm slot on the pitch, which is something he can work on to avoid tipping his best secondary. His changeup is a little firm and overthrown at times, with a velocity band from 74-79 MPH. When on, the pitch gets the necessary fading movement to keep opposing-handed hitters off balance. Phillips impressed and is someone to follow this spring as part of a strong pitching core.
