7-21-2018: The Florida League was well stocked with intriguing infielders with good defensive skill sets. I was most impressed with UCF sophomore shortstop Adams Torres, who showed off soft hands, excellent instincts and body control, and the ability to throw accurately on the run from a variety of slots. He has enough arm strength and range to have at least a shot to stick at shortstop. His defense is his calling card, but Torres also has sneaky strength in his compact 5-foot-9, 180-pound frame. He crushed a solo homer to left on a 90 mph fastball from Tulane lefty Brendan Cellucci of the Valley League, and he also showed the ability to drive the ball to the opposite field, ripping a double that got down into the right-field corner on a 91 mph fastball from Wake Forest’s William Fleming. Torres’ spray chart reveals a true all-fields approach, and he’s also a good runner with 10 stolen bases this summer. Torres hit just .207 in a very small sample size as a freshman (29 AB), but he’s making progress as a hitter this summer, hitting .258 with wood, with three homers and five doubles in 89 at-bats.
